Carlisle United missed out on a place in the National League play-off final on Sunday, following a 2-1 defeat in extra time whilst simultaneously being reduced to ten men during the game.

The club finished third in the National League after obtaining 95 points in their first campaign back in the fifth tier, but Boreham Wood proved to be a step too far.

Despite Morgan Feeney’s late first-half equaliser, Abdul Abdulmalik and Zak Brunt were on hand to deny Carlisle a shot at Wembley Stadium later this month.

However, with preparations now switching to next season – Carlisle have potentially been handed a big transfer boost ahead of the 2026/27 National League campaign.

Carlisle handed transfer boost

Carlisle utilised the market throughout the summer, bringing in the likes of David Ajiboye and Regan Linney, coming so close to booking their place in the play-off final.

They also weren’t afraid to dive into the loan market, which included the addition of Peterborough United playmaker Chris Conn-Clarke.

The 24-year-old made an instant impression at Brunton Park, registering six goal contributions in his first six matches across all competitions. This included his memorable display against Southend United back in November.

However, he struggled to replicate the form after that though he did miss a section of the campaign through injury.

Carlisle United have, however, been handed a transfer boost should they want to sign him, with Peterborough confirming they have transfer-listed the 24-year-old.

Back in November it was confirmed that Carlisle had an option to sign Conn-Clarke but as of yet – this hasn’t been taken up.

Should Carlisle make the move permanent?

Despite a disappointing run of not scoring a goal, Conn-Clarke did still end the 2025/26 season with 12 goal contributions in 18 matches – which in itself is a strong return.

The club also missed out on promotion this season and despite reaching 95 points, were still 13 points behind title-winners York City.

Manager Mark Hughes extended his stay last summer despite relegation from League Two, though the length was never disclosed, suggesting he could be on the move this summer.

These factors could suggest that Carlisle may dive into a new field this summer with new players and a new manager, which would make a move for Conn-Clarke unlikely.

Similarly, with the price tag undisclosed and now him being transfer listed, the fee to land Conn-Clarke this summer may be reduced which would favour Carlisle after they failed to seal promotion.

On his output alone, Carlisle are arguably better off with him in the side given he knows how to contribute goals when it matters – but the price tag is highly likely to play the key role.

  1. Thank you for what you’ve done on a few occasions on the pitch but United require players with a strong work ethic and a team first mentality. There is no room for egotists with attitude. Good luck with finding a new club which will happen somewhere but, hopefully, not Brunton Park. The odd flicks and tricks plus occasional incisive passing can find a home somewhere else.
