Swindon Town have sanctioned the temporary departure of defender Filozofe Mabete, who has joined National League side Forest Green Rovers until January.
The 21-year-old has completed a six-month loan move to the New Lawn, giving him the opportunity to play more regular senior football during the first half of the season. Forest Green will be hunting a Football League return after being beaten in the play-offs last season.
Mabete becomes Forest Green’s ninth addition of the summer and could make his debut when Robbie Savage’s side begin their National League campaign away at Halifax Town this weekend.
The centre-back is already familiar with his new teammates after playing against Forest Green in a pre-season friendly last weekend. His performance during that fixture impressed Savage, who thanked Swindon manager Ian Holloway for allowing the deal to proceed.
“He’s a brilliant signing, and played really well against us last weekend. It’s a great signing for the club and so many attributes.
“Thank you to Ian at Swindon who let us have him. We are in a far better position at this time compared to last season.”
Mabete joined Swindon from Wolverhampton Wanderers in June 2025 after progressing through the academy system at Molineux. He made 33 appearances in all competitions during his first season with the Robins and scored twice.
One of those goals came with a back-post finish against Cheltenham Town, while he also found the net against Luton Town in the Vertu Trophy.
The DR Congo youth international made 26 League Two appearances during the 2025/26 campaign, including 12 starts, and has featured throughout Swindon’s preparations for the new season.
He remains highly regarded at the County Ground, but Holloway has previously challenged the young defender to improve his concentration, fitness and consistency.
“He knows what he’s got to do. You need to be totally and utterly 200 per cent responsible when you play in that position all the time. Your concentration has to be at it.
“He’s got to find which one of them he is. Is he the left one? Is he the centre one? Is he the right one? Because he can do all of them, but does he do all of them better than anyone else to be earning the right to be in the team unless they’re injured?
“And is his fitness good enough to last throughout the whole game at the moment, without making a mistake? When he gets tired, he makes a mistake because he’s young. I’m glad we have got him, but he’s got to work hard to get in the team.”
Mabete’s departure leaves Ryan Tafazolli, Stephan Negru and summer signing Sam Inwood among Holloway’s recognised central defensive options. Kaelan Majekodunmi is also expected to complete a move to the County Ground.
Forest Green will hope Mabete can help them mount a promotion challenge after missing out on the National League play-offs last season. Swindon will then have the option of bringing him back into their first-team squad in January or allowing him to remain in Gloucestershire for the rest of the campaign.
This appears to be a sensible move for all parties. Mabete demonstrated his potential during his first season in senior football, but regular starts at Forest Green could help him address the concentration and consistency issues identified by Holloway. Swindon retain control of a promising defender while giving him meaningful experience in a side expected to compete near the top of the National League.
