Steve Evans Reveals Southend United Transfer Boost

Bristol Rovers manager Steve Evans has provided a loan update on forward Promise Omochere, much to the delight of the National League outfit.

Rovers fell to a 3-1 defeat on Saturday at the hands of Fleetwood Town, extending their winless run to seven matches across all competitions, with goals (taking chances) seemingly becoming an issue for the League Two side.

Currently, Bristol Rovers do have several injuries including experienced forward Ellis Harrison – whilst having players such as Omochere out on loan.

The 26-year-old is with National League promotion-chasers Southend United, where he’s had a standout campaign thus far – sparking speculation of a possible recall, which Evans has now addressed.

Steve Evans provides boost to Southend United

Since joining the Shrimpers on loan in September, Omochere has made 11 appearances for the club in the National League, where he has scored six goals and provided two additional assists.

This includes a standout debut against high-flying Yeovil Town, in which the forward provided two goal contributions during a 3-2 victory.

His standout performances in the National League and Rovers’ poor run in League Two may have suggested that a recall could occur.

However, Steve Evans has poured cold water on those chances during a post-match interview via the club’s social media pages.

He stated regarding Omochere…

“No, he (Omochere) went on a window to window loan, but if Promise stays fit – he’s a hell of a good player.

”We had to let him go and get some games in a change of environment, all I seem of him was on the injury table – it’s frustration as he’s proven he can be a good player…

”We would love to have Promise in the building and if he’s in the building and available to start games by being fully fit – he’s probably one of our leading players on the pitch.”

This news will come as a huge boost (for now) for Southend United, who currently find themselves third in the National League, though are winless in their previous four games and sit 15 points behind runaway leaders Boreham Wood.

What could this mean for the Shrimpers?

So far this season, Omochere’s goals have earned Southend nine points alone, meaning the club could have been as low as 15th without him – a big difference from their current third-place status.

Journalist Chris Phillips recently confirmed that Southend withdrew from a race to sign now-Forest Green Rovers forward Will Grigg – suggesting they could be happy enough with their current options between now and January.

Over the coming weeks, Southend face a challenging fixture schedule with the likes of Boreham Wood (1st), Harrogate Town (2nd) and AFC Fylde (4th) all to play – meaning if Southend have promotion aspirations, they’ll need their key players to beat their fellow contenders.

Therefore, retaining Omochere after his impressive start will play a vital role in whether they can continue to push towards a possible return to the EFL at the end of the season.

Once the transfer window opens in January, Omochere’s loan deal will expire, which will cause Southend problems if they are unable to extend his spell further – but that’s an issue for later on.
