Opinion – Derby Defeat Highlights Bradford City Need New Fix To Maintain Promotion Dreams

After yet another positive start to the season, it was firmly in the minds of many Bradford City fans that they could once again challenge at the very top of League One.

A win on the road at Sheffield Wednesday early in the campaign firmly set out the club’s credentials as a serious threat for a top six finish, and with one of the league’s best defensive records, it was very easy to see why there was confidence among the Bantams’ faithful.

However, a humbling West Yorkshire Derby defeat at home against Huddersfield Town this weekend should give a lot of food for thought about what a true contender should look like in what is a very competitive third tier.

City Back To Square One In Key Area

Last season’s surprise success at Valley Parade under the guidance of Graham Alexander certainly caused an upswell of hope for the campaign ahead, and there was a feeling that if they could secure just two players that hit the ground running, then they could be in with a real chance of breaking into the Championship.

While they have succeeded with one of those deals in the form of the excellent Jon McCracken between the sticks, it is once again up front which is so far proving to be the factor which shuts the door on their future ambitions.

Jake Beesley was brought in for a six-figure fee early in the summer window, and with a 13-goal, nine-assist season with Burton Albion behind him, maintaining that momentum in a side which likes aerial dominance could have spurred City on.

However, that has simply not come to fruition, and with just one goal to his name in 15 appearances and found his confidence shot with plenty of near misses throughout the opening stretch of his time in claret in amber.

New manager Michael Duff is also stuck in a tough spot with his backup options, with preferred choice Nick Powell still struggling to come back to full fitness, while Will Swan and Stephen Humphys have run hot and cold for months on end.

Bradford are therefore stuck in a serious dilemma: Stick and hope Beesley can somehow find his confidence, or twist and try and find a saviour in the January market.

Terriers Display Shows True Promotion Level

In a performance somewhat reminiscent of the job Bradford did on their arch rivals at Valley Parade last season, Huddersfield were able to snatch the game away in the space of a few minutes at the start of the second half, with Derensili Sanches Fernandes and Joe Taylor blowing away any hopes of a comeback.

Martin Drury’s side have been able to string a run together which has reminded people why Town are usually heavily favoured to go up, and in Sanches Fernandes, they have found the perfect talisman in the summer to pair alongside the Welshman and between them have scored 16 goals, more than the meagre 10 scored in League One by the whole City squad.

Those standout figures from attacking units are replicated across much of the promotion pack, with Kyle Wootton, Nahki Wells, and Mark Harris all stepping up for Stockport County, Luton Town and Oxford United respectively.

And it is their own offensive woes which will ultimately cost Bradford if they cannot redeem them as soon as possible, with just 18th-placed AFC Wimbledon scoring fewer this far into the campaign.

Slide Can Be Reversed – But Will It Be Too Late?

Last season did prove that Bradford can still be a challenger even without a talisman, with Bobby Pointon and Antoni Sarcevic taking it upon themselves to be the leading scorers for the side.

But with Pointon well out of form and Sarcevic pulled deeper on the pitch due to their short numbers in the central midfield role, those two figures are not able to deliver as efficiently as last season, leaving City in a rut, now going three league games without finding the net.

Of course, given their strength at the back, they will be a very hard team to beat for most sides, but whether they can make that count and do enough to earn the three points most weeks is the big issue that will dictate the club’s fortunes.

With Beesley not panning out, January will leave new manager Michael Duff with two big choices to make. Firstly, whether recruiting a new forward is the right choice to try and reverse their misfortune up front.

The second question may be in Sarcevic’s role, as signing a further central midfielder could allow the club captain to return to his role supporting the striker, and that could be the pivotal move which allows the attack to kick on and give Beesley or someone else some form of service to try and flourish.

Bradford City are by no means out of the promotion race, and depending on the results heading into January, they could still be in with a shot of making the top six for a second successive season.

But with some heavy hitters behind them in the table back in form, such as Leicester City and a Sheffield Wednesday side now under the watch of Dave Challinor, there could be a scenario where they have dropped off the pace of the playoffs by the turn of the new year.

If they manage to get their business right in the window and find a way to reignite their attacking prowess, then there is now reason why the Bantams cannot be a true threat to sides like Oxford, Luton and Plymouth Argyle down the stretch.
