Former Peterborough United defender Emmanuel Fernandez could one day command a £30million transfer fee, according to Barry Fry, with the Posh set to benefit from a potential sell-on clause.

The 24-year-old centre-back joined Rangers in July 2025 and has rapidly established himself as a key figure at Ibrox. His rise has not only strengthened the Scottish side’s defence but has also sparked talk that the Englishman could eventually become one of the club’s most valuable assets.

Fernandez, who previously developed at Peterborough United before making the move north of the border, has impressed during his first season in Scotland. The towering defender, who stands at 6ft 4in, has already contributed goals from the back while cementing his place in the Rangers starting line-up.

That progress has not gone unnoticed by Barry Fry, the long-serving Peterborough director of football, who believes the player could eventually command a transfer fee that dwarfs the one Rangers originally paid.

“When we sold Manny to Rangers, the fans up there had a right go at me, saying he was the worst player they had signed.

“I just knew Fernandez had to be given a chance.”

Early criticism from supporters has largely disappeared as Fernandez has grown into his role. The defender has become a regular presence in Rangers’ back line and has also proved dangerous in the opposition penalty area, scoring several goals during the campaign.

Fry believes that improvement is only the beginning, and he is convinced the player’s value will continue to rise significantly if his development continues.

“I made it clear Rangers would eventually sell him for £30m or even £40m. I said he’d score goals as well and just come through strong for them.

“Honestly, he just had to be given an opportunity.”

Fernandez began his senior career after spells in the lower tiers of English football before signing for Peterborough United in 2021. Over four seasons with the Posh he made 38 league appearances, scoring five times, and helped the club win the EFL Trophy in 2025 before his move to Scotland.

The transfer to Rangers has proved to be a turning point. In his first campaign in the Scottish Premiership he has already made close to 20 league appearances and chipped in with goals from set-pieces, adding another dimension to his game.

Barry Fry prediction

That upward trajectory is exactly what Fry predicted when Rangers completed the signing. The veteran deal-maker, who has been involved in football for more than six decades, insists the defender always had the attributes required to succeed at a higher level.

“Just look at Manny now. He has shown the Rangers fans he can defend and he can score goals.

“He’s a good player, it’s as simple as that.”

From Peterborough’s perspective, the story could become even more satisfying if Rangers eventually decide to cash in. Fry hinted that the League One club stand to benefit if Fernandez moves again in the future, thanks to the type of clauses that have long been a feature of the club’s transfer strategy.

It is a model that has served Peterborough well in the past, with several former players moving on for large fees after leaving London Road.

If Fernandez does reach the £30million mark suggested by Fry, it would represent one of the most remarkable rises in value for a defender developed by the club and potentially deliver another financial boost to the Posh.

Fernandez rapid rise

Fernandez’s rapid development shows why Peterborough remain one of the smartest talent developers in the English Football League. It is exactly the sort of story the club hopes to see repeated, with a former player flourishing elsewhere while the possibility of a future windfall quietly grows in the background.

If Rangers eventually cash in anywhere near the £30million mark suggested by Fry, the Posh will once again prove that identifying potential early can pay enormous dividends.
