Luton Town and Plymouth Argyle have missed out on signing Dylan Tait after the Falkirk midfielder’s future was confirmed.
The Hatters have rivalled both the Pilgrims and Barnsley for the signature of the 24-year-old, who has been subject to intense free agency interest due to his contract with the Bairns expiring in a few days.
League One Sides Defeated
While all three have shown interest in signing the versatile midfielder, they have failed to secure the services of Tait, with the Dundee Courier revealing that Dundee United have won the race.
It is believed that the Tangerines, who finished in seventh in the Scottish Premiership, have tied the 24-year-old down to a long-term deal as they look to return to competing for places in Europe next season.
Falkirk had offered new terms to their star player, who was a pivotal part of their Championship promotion campaign and made 47 appearances across all competitions this term.
However, John McGlynn’s side have already confirmed that they have failed in their quest to keep him at the club, announcing his departure in a statement last night.
United have moved quickly to secure multiple new signings prior to the transfer window opening, with Tait becoming their fifth deal of the summer window, joining Preston North End and ex-Hatter Jack Walton, among others.
Town Turn To Other Targets
While Luton Town have failed to sign Dylan Tait, they have already pivoted to a new deal in the form of Luca Connell, who has been a long-term target for Jack Wilshere’s side.
The Barnsley captain may indeed be on the move given the need for the Tykes to generate new transfer funds this summer, and with the Hatters gearing up for a promotion push, making the switch to Kenilworth Road is the sensible choice.
While they will face some tough competition in the form of some unnamed Championship sides, all signs are pointing towards a successful season in Bedfordshire, which will only be aided by the addition of a new leadership figure in the Irishman.
Disappointment For Argyle
Given Luton’s strength already in midfield, Plymouth Argyle may have fancied themselves as a leading contender, with their interest being more longstanding than the Hatters.
Herbie Kane’s loan spell was perhaps a disappointment, with him missing the final month of the season through injury, and adding Tait could have given them a midfielder who has been one of the best in his position in the Scottish Premiership for defensive actions.
Where they turn to next remains to be seen, but perhaps they could be able to strike a deal for someone like Bolton Wanderers‘ Josh Sheehan, whose future at the club may be in some doubt following the addition of David Watson from Kilmarnock.
