Cheltenham Town are reportedly set to make a significant addition to their squad, with experienced Austria international Andi Weimann poised to join the League Two club.
The 35-year-old has spent much of his career operating considerably higher up the English pyramid, most recently for Derby County and Blackburn Rovers, accumulating more than 500 senior appearances during spells in the Premier League, Championship and Austrian Bundesliga.
He is now expected to become Steve Cotterill’s latest recruit at Cheltenham, who begin their League Two campaign against Rotherham United on Saturday.
According to Jon Palmer of Gloucestershire Live, Weimann is set to become the Robins’ 10th arrival of a busy summer and their eighth permanent signing.
The move would bring him back to English football only a matter of months after his second spell with Derby County came to an end. Weimann returned to the Rams on a one-year contract last summer, having previously played for the club between 2015 and 2018, but found regular starts difficult to come by during 2025/26.
He featured 27 times in all competitions for Derby, scoring once, before returning to his native Austria in February. Rapid Wien took him on loan for the remainder of the season, giving him a second spell with the club where he had spent part of his youth career.
Weimann played 17 times during that loan and scored once as Rapid secured qualification for the UEFA Conference League through the Austrian Bundesliga play-offs. Derby subsequently confirmed he would leave when his contract expired in June, making him available to Cheltenham without a transfer fee.
His most productive recent spell in England came with Bristol City. Weimann spent six seasons at Ashton Gate, making 216 appearances in all competitions and scoring 51 times, including a career-best Championship campaign in 2021/22 when he struck 22 league goals.
A short loan with West Bromwich Albion followed towards the end of his Bristol City career before he signed for Blackburn Rovers in 2024. He scored nine times in 34 appearances in all competitions at Ewood Park, including on his debut against the club he would subsequently rejoin, Derby.
His career in England stretches back considerably further. Aston Villa brought Weimann over from Rapid Wien as a teenager and he progressed through their ranks before making 129 senior appearances, 113 of them in the Premier League. He scored 24 times for Villa in all competitions and later represented Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan.
There is substantial international experience to accompany that club record. Weimann has won 26 senior caps for Austria and scored twice, with his first international goal coming against France in the Nations League in 2022. He was also included in Austria’s squad for Euro 2024.
Capable of playing as a central forward or in an attacking midfield role, Weimann would give Cotterill an experienced option ahead of the new campaign. If the deal is completed as expected, a player who was featuring in the Championship and Austrian top flight last season will begin the next stage of his career in League Two.
