“Inexcusable” – Reading Boss Slams Players Following Derby Defeat

Reading manager Leam Richardson has criticised his players following Wednesday night’s 2-0 defeat to Oxford United, questioning his side’s defending and the impact of his substitutes.

The Royals also face a double suspension blow ahead of their upcoming League One clash with Stockport County, although Jack Marriott’s return provides some encouragement.

Richardson Furious After Derby Defeat

Reading suffered a disappointing evening at the Kassam Stadium as two second-half goals handed their Thames Valley rivals victory. Gatlin O’Donkor broke the deadlock in the 71st minute before Mo Missanga doubled Oxford’s advantage seven minutes later, extending Aaron Ramsey’s side’s unbeaten league run to ten matches.

The defeat left Reading sixth, with Richardson particularly frustrated by the manner in which his team conceded. Speaking to Royals TV, the manager criticised his side’s defensive lapses.

“We go to sleep for the first goal. It’s inexcusable,” Richardson admitted.

Richardson was equally disappointed with his substitutes, believing they failed to provide the necessary improvement as Oxford took control. He made his feelings clear when discussing their contribution.

“I don’t think any of our subs affected the game at all.”

The former Wigan Athletic boss also expressed his frustration at failing to deliver a positive result for Reading’s travelling supporters. He acknowledged their disappointment following the derby defeat.

“I’m absolutely devastated for the fans, for the travelling fans.”

Despite the setback, Richardson insisted his players must accept criticism and respond positively. His squad have previously demonstrated an ability to recover from disappointing results, something he will demand again.

Double Suspension Blow Despite Marriott Boost

Reading’s problems were compounded by confirmation that defender Paudie O’Connor and midfielder Andy Rinomhota will miss their upcoming league encounter against Stockport County through suspension. Both were booked against Oxford, leaving Richardson with further selection difficulties.

However, Jack Marriott’s return provided encouragement on an otherwise frustrating evening. The 32-year-old made his first league start since September following an ankle ligament injury, playing 70 minutes before being replaced by Jayden Reid.

Marriott, who scored eight league goals before his injury, went close to adding to his tally and forced Oxford goalkeeper Simon Eastwood into a save. Speaking to the Reading Chronicle, Richardson praised the striker’s contribution.

“I thought he was excellent,” the Royals boss said.

Richardson highlighted Marriott’s movement without the ball and his involvement in attacking transitions, while acknowledging the need to manage his minutes carefully. His return could prove important as Reading look to maintain their position among League One’s promotion contenders.

Attention now turns to the FA Cup clash with Peterborough United before Reading resume their league campaign against Stockport. Richardson will be demanding defensive improvements and a stronger response from his squad.
