Manchester United Loanee Injury Latest As Recall Window Looms

Manchester United loanee Ethan Wheatley is back in full training and could return to the Lincoln City squad for Saturday’s Championship trip to Queens Park Rangers.

The 20-year-old has made just one appearance since joining the Imps in August, a tally that has prompted some fans to discuss whether United might bring him back in January.

With an international break on the horizon, the moment for Wheatley to shine is fast approaching if the Imps are to keep hold of him for their 2027 push.

Ethan Wheatley Back In Training At Lincoln City

Head coach Tom Shaw gave the update after Lincoln’s 1-0 defeat at Watford on Tuesday. Wheatley missed the trip to Vicarage Road, but Tom expects to have the forward available when the Imps head to Loftus Road.

“Ethan is back in full training, so confident that he’ll be available for selection at the weekend.”

Wheatley joined on a season-long loan after spells with Walsall, Northampton Town and Bradford City. His only Lincoln appearance came the day after his arrival, when he came off the bench late in a 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Blackpool, and he is still waiting for his Championship debut.

The timing of his return could help Lincoln, who have lost their last two matches and will be without Ben House after he picked up a booking at Watford. Mikkel Ladefoged also missed that game, although Tom was optimistic about having the striker back to face QPR.

“Mikkel hopefully back for Saturday, it’s looking promising.”

There was less encouraging news on Mason Melia, with the Tottenham Hotspur loanee still a few weeks away. Tom said the forward’s recovery had been slower than both the player and the club had hoped, so any immediate reinforcements are likely to come from Wheatley and Ladefoged.

With the international break following Saturday’s game, Wheatley also has time to build up his fitness between fixtures.

Why The Recall Talk Can Wait

There is a reason fans have brought up January. United recalled Wheatley from a season-long loan at Northampton last winter, after he had scored three goals in 22 League One appearances, and sent him to Bradford for the rest of the campaign.

One brief cup appearance by November is a fair reason to ask how the loan is going. There is a difference, though, between a fit player spending every Saturday on the bench and one who has been unavailable through injury. Wheatley is only now getting the chance to show where he fits in Lincoln’s attack.

Lincoln sporting director Jez George highlighted Wheatley’s ability to play across the front line when the club announced his arrival. House’s suspension gives the Imps an immediate reason to try him, and a few weeks of seeing how Tom uses him will tell us far more than the appearance count does today. If Wheatley is fit and still struggles for minutes, the recall discussion will have more substance.
