Huddersfield Town manager Liam Manning has showered Bali Mumba with praise as the adaptable player prepares to return to his former club, Plymouth Argyle, for the first time this weekend.

The 24-year-old has been a near ever-present on the team sheet since joining the Terriers in the most recent transfer window, in a deal reported to be around £1 million.

Manning also revealed, in comments published by the Yorkshire Post, that loan striker Ryan Hardie will be assessed ahead of his own possible return to Home Park. The Scot was withdrawn early in the second half of Tuesday’s draw with Lincoln City with discomfort curtailing his evening.

The eagerly anticipated reunion in Devon adds an intriguing subplot to what is already a crucial fixture for both sides’ pursuit of the play-off places.

Huddersfield Town’s Vital Utility Player

It was Mumba’s adeptness at playing in a variety of different positions across the midfield and as a wing-back that prompted the West Yorkshire club to make their move in January.

For a player still relatively young, the Sunderland academy product also brings a wealth of experience to the squad, already closing in on 200 EFL appearances.

Speaking on the Huddersfield Town Preview Show, the 40-year-old boss revealed that he has been keen to work with Mumba, citing his willingness to play anywhere to help the team as key to the signing.

“He’s done excellent, Bali, he’s someone I’ve known for a long time. The positions he can play, the number of games he’s got under his belt, so he’s still got so much room for progress and growth.”

Given the high expectations at the Kirklees Stadium this season, it’s no surprise to see Manning surrounding himself with tried-and-trusted players as he aims to achieve the Terriers’ goal of an immediate return to the Championship.

Players who can reliably deliver in a host of positions, especially with enthusiasm and energy, are invaluable when navigating the relentless schedule of the EFL.

Play-off Race A Thrilling Spectacle

It’s fair to say that when Bali Mumba said farewell to Devon after a three-and-a-half-year stay just two months ago, he couldn’t have been expecting to face them so soon in a direct play-off showdown, given Argyle’s lowly league position back then.

The Pilgrims have surged up the table in 2026, closing within two points of the top six, while Huddersfield Town is just a point better off, setting the stage for both teams to vie for a crucial three points at Home Park on Saturday. While the result won’t decide everything, a victory would undoubtedly deliver a significant psychological blow to either potential victor.

Mumba, along with Ryan Hardie, brings recent League One promotion-winning experience to the table, having been teammates in Argyle’s title-winning team of 2023. Reunited, their bittersweet reunion with the Green Army this week carries significant weight for both their current club and their former employers.

With so many teams in the chase and positions of power constantly shifting, each game week in the third tier is becoming a major spectacle this season.

Mumba To Separate Business And Sentiment

The former England youth international has expressed his excitement about reconnecting with familiar faces at Home Park, though he remains firmly focused on securing the three points for his current side.

“It’s one of those games where I’ve been thinking how it’s going to be when I go back… there’s a lot more excitement than nerves.”

“I just want the team to do well and get three points, and make it a special day for myself.”

This match presents a unique challenge for Mumba, as he’ll be in direct competition with players who know his game better than most. He admits that the specific flank he plays on has little impact on his performance; it’s more about adapting to the varying opposing players he faces. This means his familiarity with Argyle’s wide players could aid in creating chances for his teammates, as well as inhibiting the likes of Ronan Curtis on Saturday.

With both squads boasting players at the peak of their abilities, it’s hard to imagine anything other than a pulsating match unfolding at Home Park. As the plot thickens in this League One saga, all eyes turn to what promises to be a compelling encounter.
