Swansea City are close to agreeing a deal with Huddersfield Town midfielder Tom Iorpenda, Football Lowdown understands.
The 21-year-old academy graduate enjoyed his breakthrough campaign last season during a loan spell with Notts County. After joining on a season-long deal, he was an ever-present as the Magpies secured promotion to League One via the play-offs.
This saw the youngster sweep up in the club’s end of season awards, winning the Fans and Players’ Player of the Year. He also scooped the Goal of the Season award for his stunning effort in a 5-2 win over Cheltenham Town.
Iorpenda Interest Inevitable
Following his excellent spell at Meadow Lane, it was expected that he would be integrated into Huddersfield’s squad this season. However, with just one year remaining on his current deal, it was inevitable that there would be interest from elsewhere.
Championship outfit Derby County were one of the clubs linked with his signature, prompting head coach Martin Drury to address the situation earlier this month:
“Well, I think you’d be naive not to think that there’d be no interest in Tom Iorpenda.
“He’s a young player that has real qualities and attributes. He’s a real good age. He’s been at the club for four years, I think now.
“He’s actually been first class. Hopefully, he’s here. But if he’s not, and someone with interest comes from higher up, and it’s something that Tom wants to do, then we know the nature of the window.”
Swansea City Make Late Swoop
Swansea have enjoyed an excellent summer in the transfer market, making several high-profile signings as they look to improve on last season’s 11th-placed finish. The arrivals of the likes of Joseph Opoku, Elijah Just, Moussa Yeo and Ross Stewart have strengthened Vitor Matos’ side considerably, which has been evident in the early stages of the campaign.
The Swans have picked up seven points in their opening three games. They comfortably dismantled Derby 3-0 yesterday to move up to third in the Championship.
It appears as if the Welsh outfit are still keen to add to their squad though, with talks gathering steam in the pursuit of Iorpenda. According to our sources, via our journalist Will Muxlow, a deal is close to being agreed which would see the midfielder make the move from West Yorkshire to South Wales.

It’s currently not known what fee is involved in the potential transfer, although Swansea are hoping to complete the move before Tuesday’s 11pm deadline. The Swans are also in action on the same night when they entertain Watford at the Swansea.com Stadium.
