Yeovil Town’s summer signing, Hayden Muller, has revealed all on his decision to join the club from Sutton United during an exclusive chat with National League Lowdown.
The 24-year-old brought his two-year stint with Sutton to an end earlier this summer, opting against signing a new contract in favour of joining the Glovers, ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Muller’s switch across the National League appeared to raise questions, knowing he was a regular feature for Chris Agutter’s side during the previous campaign.
Instead, he’s opted to sign for Yeovil, becoming their eighth signing of the summer.
Muller reveals reason behind Yeovil switch
The Glovers finished 16th in the National League last season, narrowly avoiding relegation after a tough campaign, in which they ended with just one win in their final seven league games.
Therefore, it is likely to come as no surprise that Yeovil have been active in the summer transfer window – with Muller becoming number eight out of their ten signings so far.
Earlier this week, Muller appeared as a guest on the National League Lowdown Podcast, where he discussed his move to Yeovil and the key reasons in favour of it.
“The only con from my point of view was moving, the rest of the project speaks for itself, when you see the players that [Yeovil] are signing, the way the manager wants to play football, the size of the club, from my point of view the only thing that could be classed as a con is moving my family to Bristol, that is it, really, the rest of it, is a positive.”
Similarly, the 24-year-old went on to discuss the interest he faced from other potential suitors and why Yeovil was the right fit for him. He added…
“I had a couple of other approaches – nothing concrete, Yeovil showed the most interest throughout the summer, they were really keen and I think, as a player that’s what you want to hear, you want a manager that’s keen to get you in, because no-one can guarantee you minutes in football, but the closest thing to a guarantee is when a manager wants to bring you in, and he’s keen to get you from day one.”
Can Yeovil challenge for promotion this season?
Last season saw Yeovil slip to an unlikely relegation battle, with a managerial change and a plethora of new signings throughout the campaign causing inconsistencies throughout the campaign.
This time around, Billy Rowley’s side have wasted no time in getting their business started, securing experienced acquisitions like Archie Davies (Carlisle United) and Joe Gubbins (Southend United), whilst also signing midfielder Zain Westbrooke from under the noses of Scunthorpe United.
Similarly, key assets like Jake Wannell, Brett McGavin and Luke McCormick have all been retained, ensuring the spine of the side has been kept intact.
On the flip side, loanee Jed Ward has returned to Bristol Rovers, but the quality of their incoming arrivals thus far has already made them stronger than the previous season.
With the likes of York City and Rochdale no longer in the division, Carlisle changing managers and Boreham Wood likely to face tests to retain their key players – there isn’t necessarily a standout favourite to win the division this season, which will give ambitious sides like Yeovil extra motivation to try and get promoted.
Whilst the Glovers’ business isn’t likely to be done yet, if they maintain the standard that they’ve set so far, it would likely become difficult to place them in the play-off/promotion conversation.
