Huddersfield Town are undergoing a wholesale transformation this summer. Failing to reach the play-offs on two occasions since their drop into the third tier, Martin Drury will look to take the club into a firm promotion challenge next season.
Several high-profile signings have not quite worked out for the Terriers in recent years, particularly in the striker position. Alfie May’s transfer from Birmingham City caught the eye of many last summer. The striker has returned 15+ goals in his last three seasons at the level for Charlton Athletic, Cheltenham Town, and Birmingham City, respectively.
His switch to West Yorkshire was less than ideal. Returning seven goals as the club fell short of the play-off positions, the striker is now set to depart the club for one of their League One rivals.
Alfie May to Leave Huddersfield Town
According to reports from Pete O’Rourke, the striker is set to move to South Yorkshire in a move to Doncaster Rovers. May formerly represented the club between 2016 and 2020, enjoying his best season in red and white in 2019 as the Rovers reached the League One play-offs, in which May contributed 11 goals.
His career really kick-started in League Two for Cheltenham. Part of their title claim in 2021, he was vital to the Robins’ survival in League One every single year. For the Gloucestershire side, he returned 67 goals in four seasons and established himself as one of the third tier’s most reliable talismans.
May is one of many strikers who have not quite hit the mark in West Yorkshire over the years despite carrying a fantastic reputation before joining, such as Joe Taylor and Dion Charles.
Town do possess one of the best squads in the division on paper, with the likes of Bali Mumba, Marcus Harness, Ryan Ledson and David Kasumu still under contract. It will be interesting to see how Drury will build for next season, as May’s departure for Doncaster is sure to raise a few eyebrows.
Alfie May Returns To Doncaster Rovers
The 32-year-old showed a lot of promise in his first spell in South Yorkshire, but this time he will arrive with a much more defined reputation.
Grant McCann’s side struggled to consistently score goals last season, largely relying on Owen Bailey and the recently departed Billy Sharp. If May can rise to the levels shown over the years, Doncaster will feel more than confident of progressing further up the League One table next season.
A 14th-placed finish was highly respectable for the newly promoted club, despite fears of relegation at the midway point of the season. McCann is a more than capable operator, and with a proven forward like Alfie May, then the club will be more than capable of building on last season’s finish.
