Stephen Humphrys could leave Bradford City ahead of deadline day, with late interest emerging in the forward.
The attacker was brought to Valley Parade from Barnsley last summer, but in the wake of Jake Beesley’s arrival and a minor knock in pre-season, he has yet to feature in a single matchday squad so far.
Humphrys Exit Possible
However, while he battles to return to full fitness, Bradford City could allow the 28-year-old to leave ahead of Tuesday night’s transfer deadline, with Darren Witcoop reporting that interest has emerged from elsewhere for his services.
He was primarily used outside of his traditional winger position by Graham Alexander last season, who instead preferred to use him as a solitary striker in the wake of Will Swan’s mid-season injury, and he proved to be an adept option with seven League One goals to his name.
However, his position in the Bantams squad has been threatened over the summer following the signing of Jake Beesley from Burton Albion, in addition to the promotion of Harry Ibbitson as a backup striker.
Alexander has stated that Humphrys would be set for a return to the City squad once he regains his fitness, telling the Telegraph & Argus:
“I sat down with Humps, just me and him, and we talked it through and that’s what he’s doing.
“He’s doing extra every single day, he’s doing double sessions three or four times a week, so it’s just waiting for the data and his fitness levels to get to where they need to be.
“As soon as that happens, he’ll be available.”
Should Bradford City Move Humphrys On?
With his status as a regular starter perhaps diminished with Jake Beesley, Kayden Jackson and now Harry Ibbitson all preferred to play up front by Graham Alexander, Stephen Humphrys is now at a crossroads with his career.
While he can certainly reclaim a place as a regular feature of the Bradford City squad, the signing of Beesley does hint at a preference to have a much more aerially dominant forward leading the line, which the 28-year-old is not.
His place could be reduced even further with a further addition up front, which could now be a top priority for the Bantams in the wake of George Pratt’s arrival and an impending move for Queens Park Rangers‘ Kieran Morgan on loan to add to their midfield options.
Interest is now growing in sanctioning a Humphrys exit, no doubt helped by his lack of involvement in any of City’s opening games, but whether he leaves could entirely be dependent on if Alexander presses on and finds a new forward before the window shuts.
