Cambridge United have fielded an improved bid for Carlisle United goalkeeper Gabe Breeze.
Several sides have been coveting the 22-year-old this summer, with Blues boss Rob Elliott confirming that interest has come from other places on top of the known pursuit from Cambridge United, who have already had one offer rejected.
New Offer Lodged
Now, according to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Cambridge United have now pushed once more to secure their target and have submitted an improved offer to Carlisle, with it unclear what the Cumbrians’ stance is on this latest move.
The U’s have been on the lookout for a new goalkeeper as they look to improve their options heading back into League One this season, having entrusted Jake Eastwood to see them through last season.
Carlisle have already acted to cover in case the Penrith-born shot-stopper leaves the club, with Archie Mair brought in on a free transfer after his exit from the relegated Morecambe.
Speaking about potential interest from elsewhere in Breeze, Rob Elliot told the News & Star last week:
“I don’t know the official side of it. I know there’s a lot of interest in him, not just from Cambridge – that came out in the press.
“But when you saw him [against Darlington], the way he took crosses and his distribution, the size of him…he’s going to be a top, top keeper.
“So we’re very fortunate to be in a position where we have a young lad who’s come from the academy that is a huge talent, that Football League clubs want.
“For me, it puts us in a really nice position in the fact that we’ve got a top goalkeeper and, from there, we’ll have to wait and see if anything comes of it.”
Breeze Deserves Shot
Since being handed his first opportunity to be the first choice amid Harry Lewis’ struggles, Gabe Breeze has been a crucial part of the Carlisle United squad.
Having spent last season in the National League, he looked one of the league’s more assured keepers, and was only slightly behind Oliver Whatmuff and Harrison Male in the golden glove race.
While he may struggle to stake his claim as a first-choice at Cambridge following Jake Eastwood’s efforts for the club last season, he is certainly worthy of regularly playing under Neil Harris.
It remains to be seen whether Carlisle entertain this new bid, but it does now feel inevitable that the club will sell their local hero and turn to Archie Mair to play between the sticks next season.
