Republic of Ireland international Jessie Stapleton has completed a permanent move from West Ham United to Leicester City.
The 21-year-old defender has signed a three-year contract with the Foxes, moving for an undisclosed fee subject to the necessary clearances. Her arrival strengthens a Leicester squad looking to respond immediately following relegation to WSL2 last season.
Stapleton joined West Ham in the summer of 2023 after establishing herself as one of Ireland’s most promising young players. However, regular senior opportunities proved difficult to secure in east London, and much of her development over the past three years came during loan spells away from the club.
She initially spent time with Reading before representing Sunderland and Nottingham Forest. Those moves allowed her to gain valuable experience across the women’s game while continuing to build her reputation as a versatile and physically capable defender.
The Dublin-born player has also become increasingly involved at international level, collecting 20 senior caps for the Republic of Ireland. Her move to Leicester places her alongside fellow Ireland internationals Katie Keane and Heather Payne, giving Carla Ward another player familiar with the demands of the national team environment.
Leicester were relegated from the Women’s Super League after losing a play-off against Charlton Athletic, but Stapleton believes the club are well placed to mount a promotion challenge and return to the top division.
Speaking after the transfer was confirmed, she said: “I’m happy it’s over the line and I’m excited to get going. This is a club with a lot of ambition.
“The club can help me grow as a player, and I feel I can help the club back to where it belongs.”
Stapleton becomes the latest Republic of Ireland international to secure a move during a busy summer for members of Carla Ward’s squad. For the defender, the switch should provide the stability of a long-term contract and a realistic opportunity to play regularly for a team expected to compete near the top of WSL2.
Although Leicester’s relegation represented a significant setback, the calibre of players they are now attracting suggests they are determined to make their stay outside the top flight a brief one. Stapleton’s experience, age and potential make her a sensible addition for a club rebuilding with promotion firmly in mind.
Her departure also brings an end to a three-year association with West Ham in which her route to the first team never fully opened up. Leicester can now offer the consistent football she needs at an important point in her career, while the Foxes gain an established international who should still have considerable room to develop.
