Sheffield Wednesday defender Reece Johnson has signed a new contract at Hillsborough before joining Eastleigh on a season-long loan.
The 20-year-old has agreed a further 12 months with the Owls, while the club also hold an option to extend his stay by another year. As part of the same announcement, Wednesday [confirmed the move](https://www.swfc.co.uk/news/2026/july/29/reece-johnson-signs-contract-extension-and-joins-eastleigh-on-loan/) to National League side Eastleigh for the duration of the 2026/27 campaign.
Johnson heads south after making his breakthrough at senior level last season, when he was handed 16 appearances across all competitions. The left-back had been promoted into the first-team squad following a turbulent summer at Hillsborough and quickly took his opportunity to make an impression.
His professional debut came in the Carabao Cup against Bolton Wanderers in August 2025. Johnson played the full 90 minutes, scored Wednesday’s third goal in a 3-3 draw and helped the Owls progress through the subsequent penalty shootout.
He made his Championship debut only three days later, coming off the bench against Stoke City, before gradually earning further involvement during the campaign. Johnson finished the season with 12 league appearances, one FA Cup outing and three Carabao Cup appearances.
The academy graduate was also handed his first Championship start against Birmingham City in January, completing the full match. Wednesday subsequently confirmed that he had been offered fresh terms at the end of the season, and an agreement has now been finalised.
Johnson will spend the next stage of his development with Eastleigh, where the expectation is that he will challenge for regular first-team football in the National League. The move should provide him with the consistent senior minutes that can be difficult to guarantee at Hillsborough.
Sheffield Wednesday sporting director Simon Wilson believes the loan will allow Johnson to build on the progress he made during the second half of last season.
“Reece has contributed to our first team throughout the last six months and this will allow him to continue earning opportunities at senior level,” Wilson said.
“The National League is a challenging environment for young players and Eastleigh have a proven track record of developing talent. We look forward to playing our part in supporting Reece’s progress throughout the season.”
Johnson initially signed his first professional contract with Wednesday in July 2024, having progressed through the club’s academy. His new deal protects the Owls’ longer-term interest in the player, while the additional option gives them control over his future beyond next summer.
The season at Eastleigh now represents an important opportunity for the defender to prove he can perform consistently in senior football. A successful loan could leave him well placed to challenge for a more prominent role at Hillsborough when he returns.
