Walsall are leading the chase to sign a current Premier League attacking midfielder, as they aim to continue building a squad to try and clinch a return to the third tier.
The Saddlers have already dived into the Premier League market with the addition of Coventry City midfielder Isaac Moore on a season-long loan, but their work appears yet to be completed.
Lee Grant’s side have had a strong start to their campaign, knocking out Championship side Bristol City in the EFL Cup, before beating Gillingham and drawing with Grimsby Town.
Despite a penalty shootout loss to Leyton Orient on Tuesday, the Saddlers are still yet to concede a goal this season.
Walsall eye Premier League transfer
Walsall haven’t stuck to the same plan in terms of transfers this summer, recruiting players from non-League, as well as adding proven EFL experience.
However, the club aren’t shy when it comes to targetting the loan market, and as it stands they remain in pole position to land their next temporary target.
According to a report from journalist Pete O’Rourke, Walsall lead the chase to sign Brighton Hove Albion forward Caylan Vickers on a season-long loan deal.
The 21-year-old spent the entirety of the 2025/26 season on loan in League One, featuring for both Barnsley and Wigan Athletic – having a somewhat positive campaign.
Across all competitions, Vickers managed 33 appearances whilst out on loan, contributing to seven goals – with five of them coming in League One.
Brighton have already given Vickers the green light to leave the Premier League side on loan, with a plethora of EFL sides taking an interest currently.
Can the Saddlers stand tall and land Vickers?
Currently, there is no mentions of other clubs in the running to sign the 21-year-old this summer, so it is difficult to talk about Walsall’s chances against their possible counterparts.
However, the Saddlers have a proven track record when it comes to developing young players and that could be something that Vickers looks to as a factor behind a potential switch to the Bescot Stadium.
On the other hand, Vickers had five goal contributions in League One last season and that likely could suggest that other third-tier sides are interested in landing the 21-year-old for themselves.
Similarly, Vickers is 21 and at an age where players in Academy football tend to start prioritising regular minutes and possible permanent moves, which means that if a side were to make a permanent offer for him, it could rule Walsall out.
