Chesterfield are set for a transfer showdown with Walsall to sign Terell Thomas ahead of his exit from Carlisle United.
The centre-back was one of several names that parted ways with the Brunton Park club this summer after Mark Hughes’ side failed to return to the EFL at the first time of asking.

Now, according to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Thomas could be set for a return to the EFL with two League Two clubs in Chesterfield and Walsall both interested in signing the 30-year-old.
The Bescot side are under new management with Lee Grant eyeing new signings to begin his tenure, but is yet to get anyone through the door, amid two failed attempts to sign Harrogate Town’s Reece Smith.
They are in need of new defensive options having already released Connor Barrett to Wigan Athletic and Priestley Farquharson to Crawley Town this window so far.
Chesterfield are yet to bring in any new faces this window as well, but have been handed a slight boost with news that Kyle McFadzean will return for pre-season training amid negotiations over a new contract.
However, there is still a big hole in the heart of their backline following the release of long-serving club captain Jamie Grimes.
Thomas played 28 times for Carlisle in the National League last season, which was his second campaign for the Blues following his free transfer to Cumbria from Charlton Athletic.
Shrewd Deal Available
For someone who has tons of experience in the higher levels of the EFL, Terell Thomas would be a brilliant addition to two sides eyeing to improve their finishes in League Two next season.
While he will disappear at certain points of the year with his involvement in the St. Lucia national team, having a defender of the 30-year-old’s calibre willl be useful for both Chesterfield and Walsall.
He should be a more than ample replacement ability-wise for Jamie Grimes in Paul Cook’s Chesterfield side, but whether he can cover for the leadership qualities that he gave the Spirites up until his mid-season loan to Boston United.
For Walsall, he should represent a new-look club under the watch of Lee Grant, and with the club being frequent contenders for the playoffs, stand a good chance of keeping themselves in contention for a top seven finish.
No matter which club he lands at, a free transfer for Terell Thomas would mark a brilliant deal for a free transfer and would arguably be one of the stronger signings made by a League Two club this summer.
