Former Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp has made a remarkable return to football just three weeks after announcing his retirement, joining AFC Rushden & Diamonds ahead of their FA Cup clash with Burton Albion. The 40-year-old could now score his 300th career goal for the successor to the club where his senior goalscoring journey began 21 years ago.
Sharp Returns to Where It All Began
Sharp’s comeback was confirmed on Sunday, with the eighth-tier club preparing to visit League One Burton in the FA Cup first round on Saturday, 7 November. He had announced his retirement on 11 October following a 22-year professional career featuring spells at Sheffield United, Doncaster Rovers, Southampton and Leeds United.
His final competitive appearance before retirement was particularly memorable. Sharp scored a hat-trick for Doncaster in a 3-1 victory at Peterborough United on 2nd May, then had what would have been his 300th career goal ruled out for offside.
That near miss has given his surprise return an extraordinary twist. Sharp now has another opportunity to reach the milestone at the club where he scored his first senior goal.
The striker joined the original Rushden & Diamonds on loan from Sheffield United in 2005, scoring nine times in 16 appearances. The original club folded in 2011, before supporters formed AFC Rushden & Diamonds as its successor.
Speaking to The Non-League Football Paper before the move was confirmed, Sharp acknowledged how special the occasion could become. He said the possibility of reaching 300 goals at Rushden had already crossed his mind.
“To go back after all those years, and to score my 300th goal for them in the FA Cup – it would be such a great story, wouldn’t it?”
Burton Albion Await as FA Cup Fairytale Continues
AFC Rushden & Diamonds reached the FA Cup first round proper for the first time in the supporter-owned club’s history after beating Morecambe in qualifying. Their reward is a trip to Burton’s Pirelli Stadium, where they will attempt to upset opponents five divisions above them.
Sharp’s arrival also addresses an immediate problem for manager Elliot Sandy. Forward James Clifton is suspended, while the club had concerns over other attacking options before securing the veteran striker’s signature.
The former Sheffield United captain brings considerable experience to the occasion. His 130 Championship goals make him the competition’s leading scorer since it was rebranded in 2004, while he also helped Sheffield United win three promotions, including two to the Premier League.
Sharp’s involvement against Burton would mark his first competitive appearance since May. His presence adds a compelling subplot to an already remarkable cup run, regardless of how many minutes he plays.
Sharp’s last match ended with three goals and an agonisingly disallowed fourth. His next could provide the perfect ending to a story that began at Rushden more than two decades ago.
