Peterborough United manager Robbie Savage has highlighted his side’s struggles in both penalty areas following another disappointing League One defeat. The Posh dropped to 22nd in the table after Saturday’s 2-0 home loss against Jack Wilshere’s Luton Town.
Peterborough have now gone four league matches without a victory, leaving them inside the relegation zone and just one point from safety.
Despite creating several opportunities against the Hatters, Savage’s side were unable to find the net, while goals conceded early in both halves proved costly. However, the former Wales international remains confident his players can turn their fortunes around.
Savage Highlights Peterborough’s Costly Mistakes
Speaking after Saturday’s defeat, Savage expressed frustration at his team’s inability to convert chances and prevent goals. As reported by the Peterborough Telegraph, the Posh boss admitted his side had once again made a poor start.
“You can’t start games like we did,” Savage said.
The manager also acknowledged that Peterborough’s problems at both ends of the pitch were undermining their performances.
“If you can’t keep clean sheets and if you don’t convert chances you have no chance,” he added.
Saturday’s defeat followed a familiar pattern for Peterborough, who threatened Luton’s goal without finding a breakthrough. Harry Leonard struck the crossbar during the first half, while the hosts created further opportunities after the interval. However, Jordan Clark’s third-minute opener and Liam Kelly’s own goal shortly after half-time secured a fourth consecutive League One victory for Wilshere’s side.
Savage’s comments suggest that improving his team’s finishing and defensive concentration will be central to reversing their recent results.
Injury Boost Offers Hope for Savage
Despite the defeat, Savage identified some positives as Peterborough attempt to climb away from the bottom four.
Defender Sam Hughes returned to action after almost 18 months on the sidelines, providing a welcome boost to a squad searching for greater defensive stability. Hughes impressed his manager with two important blocks against Luton, while Savage also praised the contribution of winger Bolu Shofowoke.
The Peterborough boss suggested Hughes could make his first start since returning when the club host Reading in the FA Cup next Saturday. That fixture offers Peterborough an opportunity to rebuild confidence before resuming their League One campaign.
Savage enjoyed an impressive start to his Football League managerial career, guiding Peterborough to a 3-1 victory away at Leicester City in his opening league match.
However, consistency has proved difficult to establish since that memorable result. With Peterborough sitting just one point from safety following Saturday’s matches, the situation remains recoverable.
The immediate challenge for Savage is turning encouraging spells of play into goals and points, rather than allowing familiar mistakes to undermine his team’s efforts. For a manager who continues to back his players, the coming weeks will provide an important test of whether Peterborough can find the consistency needed to escape the relegation places.
