Plymouth Argyle have opened contract discussions with attacking midfielder Owen Dale following his release from Oxford United. The 27-year-old played a key role during his loan spell at Home Park last season, contributing to Argyle’s impressive surge up the table.

Following a sluggish start to the last campaign that ultimately cost them a shot at the play-offs, Tom Cleverley will be aiming to get the bulk of his summer transfer business completed early, in preparation for a strong start when the season restarts in August.

As reported by Alan Nixon, the Pilgrims have reportedly initiated talks with Dale regarding a full-time deal that aligns with their wage budget, though with no agreement currently in place, he remains free to consider alternative offers. With significant interest swirling around their already contracted players, securing just some of the key figures behind last season’s transformation before any potential departures occur is a high priority for the club this summer.

How Did Dale Fare On Loan?

The pacey right winger has made 32 appearances for Argyle since his arrival on loan in September. Upon his arrival in Devon, it took him some time to settle in, initially struggling to make an impact in an Argyle side that found it challenging to adapt to life back in League One.

However, he was among a number of players in the Plymouth Argyle squad who greatly benefited from Cleverley’s shift to a consistent 4-4-2 formation, where he frequently started on the right wing.

His sole goal of the last season occurred in a tense match against Huddersfield Town at Home Park, where his instinctive reaction sparked the Pilgrims’ comeback in a 3-1 victory. He also contributed three assists in the league, but it was his form towards the end of the season that endeared him to the Green Army, with his work rate never being in doubt.

Dale’s endeavor to step onto the opposition was influential in Argyle’s high-pressing style, which took them to the brink of the play-offs. His popularity within the dressing room and the reported early signal of intent to bring him back underscore his value to both the staff and the fans.

Plymouth Argyle’s Pursuit Of Continuity

Having come out on the wrong side of a three-way battle on the final day, Argyle faces the challenge of transforming their hurt into a summer of intense preparation and effective squad building.

One key strategy for Argyle to channel this hurt and build on their momentum is to maintain the core of the squad that fostered a winning mentality in 2026, especially away from home. Their initial efforts appear to be focused on negotiations with Owen Dale, but there were other loanees who became firm favourites with the fans just as much.

Alex Mitchell emerged as a talismanic figure at centre half during his loan from Charlton Athletic, embracing his time at Home Park with gratitude at the end of his loan spell. A primary objective for the staff must be to try to reunite Mitchell with Mathias Ross next season, where they can further develop their formidable partnership that grew increasingly solid as the season progressed.

With Lorent Tolaj, Bim Pepple, and even now Owen Oseni potentially attracting transfer interest, a significant portion of the budget revealed at the recent fans forum may be strategically reinvested in securing the next generation of Argyle strikers. The potential permanent acquisition of Dale would represent a cost-effective deal beneficial to both sides, given their shared history of creating memorable moments together, a blueprint that they may hope to follow throughout the preseason in their recruitment.

Maintaining a degree of continuity within the squad that concluded the League One season with a 3-2 victory at Northampton Town could prove crucial to Argyle’s bid to start next term as they mean to go on. With the club hell-bent on finalising a deal, it’ll be interesting to see if Dale decides to extend his stay in the South West.
