MK Dons are interested in making a move for Sunderland youngster Matty Young following the renewal of his Black Cats contract.
The goalkeeper has been on loan with League Two outfit Salford City for the past two seasons, helping them reach their highest-ever EFL finish in the process with fourth place in League Two this campaign.
Dons Face Competition For Young
Salford, however, will head into next season unlikely to retain their loanee, with Sunderland set to renew his contract for a further four years as he continues his development towards a place in Regis Le Bris’ senior side.
Reports from Alan Nixon via his Patreon page state that Young is poised to move up the divisions as the Black Cats look to test the 19-year-old in either League One or the Championship.
Milton Keynes Dons are in the mix to sign Young, with Paul Warne looking to gear up his side after their automatic promotion to the third tier.
The Buckinghamshire outfit face an uncertain future when it comes to their options between the sticks, with current number one Craig MacGillivray’s contract expiring this summer and no news as of yet as to whether the 33-year-old will return for another season.
However, the Dons face competition from Championship newcomers Cardiff City for Young’s services, seemingly as a second choice behind Nathan Trott, who the Bluebirds have secured on a permanent basis after weeks of speculation as to whether he would be open to a switch from FC Copenhagen after a loan spell in South Wales.
Ammies Could Still Play Role
With Sunderland now ready to test Matty Young at a higher level after two years in League Two, MK Dons have identified their newest first-choice goalkeeper amid uncertainty around Craig MacGillivray.
After a tough first season where he battled with Jamie Jones for a regular place at Salford City, the 19-year-old emerged with flying colours and earned himself a second season in Greater Manchester where he has shone in a push for promotion.
Being one of the best keepers in League Two this season, Young deserves a place as a regular option in the third tier, and unlike Cardiff City, MK Dons can promise regular game time.
However, there could be more twists in this story depending on the fate of the playoffs, as if Salford City emerge as the fourth and final promoted club this season, Karl Robinson should be able to make a convincing case for another loan spell for Sunderland’s future star.
