Reading are looking at making a move for Tom McIntyre as he sets to become a free agent at the end of the month.
The Royals are on course for a rebuild under Leam Richardson over the summer, despite increasing pressure on the former Wigan Athletic manager over the final weeks of the season which saw them miss out on the playoffs.
McIntyre Could Make Berkshire Return
With Reading already publishing their retained and released list for the end of their season, attention is now turning to potential incoming recruitments ahead of the 2026/27 season.
According to the Reading Chronicle, a former Royal in Tom McIntyre could be brought back into the fold just two years after leaving his boyhood club for Portsmouth.
The centre-back has faced somewhat of a nomadic career since his departure from Berkshire, playing this season in League One with Bradford City after John Mousinho loaned him out from Fratton Park.
The 27-year-old struggled to make his mark in claret and amber, playing just seven times before having his loan terminated, and would eventually be released in order to facilitate a move to Scotland with Aberdeen.
While he had a solid start at Pittodrie, a season-ending injury curtailed his season after just five games and ultimately saw the Dons opt against offering him a contract extension into next season.
Is McIntyre Return Wise?
Tom McIntyre is on the road to recovery and should he progress well enough, it could see him make a return to Reading, a club that he spent the first eight years of his career with.
It has been a tough 12 months for the former Scotland youth international, struggling to make a mark at Bradford City and ultimately failing to oust Curtis Tilt, Aden Baldwin and others to stake a regular place in Graham Alexander’s plans.
A move to Aberdeen seemed to have finally earned him a place permanently at Aberdeen in what has been a tough season generally for the club, but a serious injury put an end to any chance he could continue in the Granite City.
A move to Reading, while making for a great reunion, may not be the best course of action given his injury concerns and with players like Paudie O’Connor, Jeriel Dorsett and Benn Ward contracted for next season, he may face the same issues he found at Valley Parade.
However, with both Ryan Nyambe and Finley Burns heading back to their parent clubs, having a free, experienced option to add depth to their defensive ranks could be a good bit of business.
