Notts County have rejected a late bid for key striker Matthew Dennis from Burton Albion.
The forward, who has made an immediate impact since his arrival as a free agent in the summer, had previously been tipped with an exit from Meadow Lane prior to the January window opening.
Brewers Eye Striker Amid Beesley Interest
According to Pete O’Rourke, Burton have tried and failed to convince Notts County to part with Dennis, with the Magpies rejecting their bid for the 23-year-old.
That bid from Gary Bowyer’s side comes days after interest from Bradford City for their star striker in Jake Beesley, after the Bantams lodged a six-figure bid which was rejected.
Luton Town have also been credited with interest in the Albion number nine; however, they have since moved to sign Devante Cole from Port Vale.
County had previously expected interest in both Matt Dennis and strike partner Alasanna Jatta prior to the window opening, with club director Richard Montague stating:
“There could be a situation where two incredible offers come in for those players and then it makes sense for the club to wish them well and move them on.
“If we thought that there was an opportunity to increase our promotion chance, we wouldn’t rule anything out.”
County On Lockdown
With little time left in the transfer window, it seems that Notts County have now shut up shop and will not entertain any offers for their key talents.
Matthew Dennis has been a standout performer in the division, and alongside Alasanna Jatta, has 24 goals between them in League Two for Martin Paterson’s side.
With those two being near-unstoppable as of late, losing either could put a serious dent in their promotion hopes and they would be much poorer off without them.
Where Do Burton Go From Here?
Burton Albion have been poor offensively so far this season, with only Wigan Athletic and bottom side Port Vale scoring fewer than the Brewers in League One.
While Jake Beesley has proven how pivotal he is for the club with his efforts this season, interest in the striker has perhaps highlighted a need to be not so dependent on the 29-year-old.
Thankfully, they look set to get past the deadline with the number nine still in yellow, but they may still be in a precarious place with no other regular goalscorers at Gary Bowyer’s disposal.
Whether they can find another solution or prepare an improved offer for Matthew Dennis remains to be seen in the limited time left, but it may be crucial in their efforts to avoid a bottom-four finish.
