Lincoln City are expecting to make another one or two signings as the club continue shaping their squad for the Championship campaign.
Joint head coach Tom Shaw has revealed that further business is likely over the coming days, with conversations taking place daily between the coaching staff, chief executive Liam Scully and sporting director Jez George.
City have already strengthened their promotion-winning squad during the summer, but their first matches back in the Championship have helped Shaw and fellow head coach Chris Cohen assess where further additions may be required.
“There will be one or two more bits coming into the building, I think, which we’re really excited about,” he told Imps+. “We’re speaking with Liam and Jez every single day.”
Recruitment plans are naturally drawn up well before the transfer window opens, but they rarely remain completely unchanged once competitive football begins. Injuries, player availability and the demands of a higher division can all influence which positions are treated as priorities.
The Imps have already experienced the intensity of the Championship during matches against Middlesbrough and Portsmouth. Shaw indicated that those early fixtures have provided the coaching staff with additional information as they consider the final composition of the squad.
“You start off with a grand plan for what you want it to look like, and injuries, bits and bobs and the feel of the Championship straight away will affect our thinking and what we believe is the priority.”
City have suffered injury issues during the opening weeks of the season, while some of their summer arrivals have needed time to build their fitness after joining at different points of pre-season. None of the new signings had started one of the club’s opening three competitive fixtures, although that could change during the Carabao Cup tie at Blackpool.
The comments suggest City’s remaining business will be shaped by the immediate requirements identified by Shaw and Cohen rather than simply following the recruitment plan drawn up at the beginning of the summer.
Any further additions will join a squad built around the players who earned promotion from League One last season. That continuity has been clear in the selections made so far, with the coaching staff continuing to place considerable faith in the established group.
Shaw also praised the backing provided by the club during the window, pointing to the calibre of players already recruited while confirming that further arrivals are expected shortly.
“The club have been amazing, giving us some top players to join our already excellent group from last year. I imagine that, in the next few days or probably the next week, there will be one or two new signings in the building.”
There are no guarantees in any transfer window, particularly while negotiations remain ongoing, but Shaw’s comments represent a clear indication that City are working towards further additions.
With the Championship campaign under way and the window moving towards its conclusion, the next week could bring the final pieces of Lincoln’s summer recruitment.
