Rotherham United are looking to add to their side after a slow start to their League Two campaign.
The Millers have picked up just one point in their opening two games under new manager Alex Bruce. It’s a start that has likely left some Rotherham fans slightly nervous about what lies ahead this season.
With just over a week left of the transfer window, the South Yorkshire side are said to be interested in Salford City’s Josh Austerfield.
Rotherham United Interested in Josh Austerfield
The Rotherham Advertiser have reported that Austerfield is a target for the Millers, as they look to add fourth-tier experience to their squad.
Manager Bruce knows the player well. He worked with the 24-year-old while he was a coach at Salford City.
When asked about the midfielder, Bruce said:
“I don’t like talking about contracted players who are with other clubs until there is something concrete.
“Josh is someone I like. I’ve worked with him before. But that’s all I can say on that.”
Regular Last Campaign
While the English midfielder hasn’t featured yet this season, he was a regular last campaign as Salford reached the play-off final, a game he started. Austerfield played 38 games in League Two last season and received an average Sofascore rating of 6.71, while averaging 64 minutes per game.
The 24-year-old contributed with three assists and two goals in the campaign. He also averaged 0.7 key passes per game and created five big chances. Defensively, Austerfield recorded some respectable numbers. He ended the League Two season with 0.7 interceptions per game, 1.4 tackles per game, 1.2 clearances per game, and recovered 2.3 balls per game.
Could Rotherham United Sign Austerfield?
Given the fact that Austerfield is yet to feature for Salford, he could become available before the end of the transfer window. Even if it’s just a temporary loan move, he would be a great addition for the Millers.
They’ve lacked a creative spark since the start of the season, and Austerfield could be the man to inject that into the team. He also has several years’ experience in League Two, even at his young age.
If he becomes available and he’s keen on a move to South Yorkshire, it’s not something the club should pass up.
