Luton Town had submitted an accepted £1 million bid in their failed attempt to sign Stockport County‘s Jack Diamond.

The Hatters had made a reported £750,000 bid turned away by Dave Challinor’s side earlier on Deadline Day as they looked to continue their January squad overhaul.

Time Ends Chances

According to the Manchester Evening News’ Sam Byrne, Stockport had agreed an £1 million deal for Jack Diamond with Luton Town, but a potential deal was scuppered by County’s need for a replacement.

The Edgeley Park outfit had already made moves earlier on Deadline Day, with former star Louie Barry set for a third loan spell at the club as he comes back from an injury he suffered at Sheffield United.

Diamond has been linked with a move away from Greater Manchester in the past, with Football League World stating Derby County challenged other Championship sides for his services in the summer.

With 18 months left on his contract at Stockport, the 26-year-old has been a key part of Dave Challinor’s squad with five goals and as many assists and featured in every single League One match this campaign.

No Loss For Stockport

While it would have been a great injection of funds going forward, having their potential sale of Jack Diamond collapse is no real loss to Stockport County’s chances.

Having been a great contributor to the Hatters’ season so far, the former Sunderland man has proven his worth and will be a great support to their forward players for the remainder of the campaign.

However, his chances of game time may come under threat in the future, with Louie Barry’s expected arrival meaning more competition alongside Malik Mothersille for a place as an attacking midfielder in the starting eleven.

Diamond may indeed come under further interest over the summer, and then a decision will have to come as to whether a sale is the best course of action with a year left on his contract.
