Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder and fan favourite Sam Hutchinson has shared how he offered his services to the club in January.
The Owls’ nightmare 2025/26 season ended with the Owls on zero points after several points deductions.
Before a ball was even kicked, Henrik Pedersen’s side appeared to be down and out.
Sheffield Wednesday lost the likes of Josh Windass, Michael Smith, and Djeidi Gassama as the club failed to pay wages and looked to make some quick money.
That left just a handful of first-team players, many of whom weren’t starters the season before, mixed in with inexperienced youngsters.
Despite their struggles, former Owl Hutchinson has shared that he was ready to return to the club once again to play his part for the club he loves.
“I wouldn’t have even been worried about getting paid”
Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Hutchinson explained how he reached out to his good friend and Wednesday coach, Giles Coke, about a potential return:
“It’s been massively difficult. I told Cokey I’d come back. I thought I could still do a job and make a difference last year. I wouldn’t have even been worried about getting paid because you just want the club to do well.”
When pressed on how serious he was about a return to Hillsborough, Hutch said:
“Look, it was just to Giles, the two of us are good friends. But 100 per cent I would have come back. I would do anything for the club, even now, I would come back. I know I could offer something to the club. Regardless of whether people think I’m old or I’m finished or whatever.”

In the season that’s just ended in the Championship, Hutch would have been an excellent player to have around the club.
His love for the club is clear to see, and he has the experience that was needed last season to help guide the young players through the season.
His injury record might have meant he couldn’t have played every game but having him around the club during the dark days last season would have likely been helpful for everyone.
Even going into their League One campaign next season, having Hutchinson around the club could be beneficial to Pedersen and the players.
He might not play regular football, but he could play a role similar to that Jose Semedo did in Carlos Carvalhal’s first season at the club – a season where Hutch was one of the stars.
