Stevenage are one of a number of League One clubs considering a loan move for Queens Park Rangers striker Alfie Lloyd, sources have revealed to Football Lowdown.
The Hertfordshire side narrowly missed out on promotion, punching way above their budget in League One. Their robust, organised defensive setup made them hard to beat, and they crept into the top six on narrow, 1-0 margins. They were beaten play-off semi-finalists, but will be hoping for another stab at the top six this coming campaign.
Their achievements were overshadowed somewhat by Lincoln City, another side with a small budget and big aspirations. Michael Skubala’s Imps won the division at a canter, going 29 games unbeaten. The closest a side came to beating them was Stevenage, who led 2-1 with seconds left in their clash in April.
Alex Revell’s side are not unlike Lincoln, and they’re now believed to be targeting Lloyd, who lifted the trophy with the Imps. He was warmly received by City fans for his work rate and energy, attributes that appeal to Stevenage, as they look to replicate their own heroics from last season.
Lloyd came through the academy at hometown club Yeovil Town, making his National League debut in 2020, when he appeared as a late substitute in a 3-1 home defeat to Hartlepool United. Queens Park Rangers then moved to sign him in May 2021, agreeing on an undisclosed fee plus add-ons and handing the forward a three-year deal.
After a loan spell with Eastleigh during the 2022-23 season, Lloyd had to contend with injuries the following campaign, but still earned a new QPR contract. He made his first-team debut for the club in August 2024 against West Bromwich Albion and later signed fresh terms, before loan spells at Leyton Orient and Lincoln City.
He was on loan with Orient, but spent much of the early season injured. He was recalled by QPR and sent to Lincoln after the Hoops had bought Justin Obikwu, on loan at Lincoln, but recalled by Coventry to be sold. Lloyd started just once for the Imps, scoring once against Stockport County, but was a regular finisher in games, coming off the bench with energy.
Despite his Imps’ spell, he is believed to be down the pecking order at Loftus Road, with Obikwu one of the players blocking his path, and a loan move seems sensible. A number of League One clubs are on alert, but Stevenage works well in terms of location, as well as him proving stylistically, he could be a fit as well.
