Sheffield Wednesday have to rebuild their squad ahead of the League One season, and one particular striker should be one player they are considering.
The Owls dropped to the third tier after entering administration in October and were hit with various points deductions.
They looked down and out before the season even started. The vast majority of their first team left, leaving them with a handful of professionals mixed with young players not experienced in the senior game.
Their depleted numbers will carry over into next season, but they can now crucially sign players.
With many possibilities likely being considered by the Sheffield Wednesday hierarchy, 29-year-old forward Davis Keillor-Dunn should be someone on their list.
Davis Keillor-Dunn Finding Life at Wrexham Hard
Keillor-Dunn left Barnsley for Wrexham in January, but the move hasn’t worked out as he would have likely wished.
DKD played just six times for the Red Dragons in the Championship, with all his appearances coming from the bench.
In his limited game time, he failed to register a single shot on target and averaged just 0.5 shots per game.
He also struggled to make an impact creatively. Keillor-Dunn didn’t create any big chances and averaged just 0.3 key passes per game.
Wrexham have a lot of attacking quality, so it’s understandable why he has struggled to make his mark on the first team.
Former Owl Josh Windass finished the campaign as Wrexham’s top scorer with 16 goals, five goals ahead of Kieffer Moore and seven in front of Sam Smith.
That trio would likely be welcomed into any Championship team and were always going to be tough for DKD to dethrone.
Why Sheffield Wednesday Should Try to Sign Keillor-Dunn?
Although he has found life at Wrexham a little tricky since joining, Keillor-Dunn had no such problems in League One with Wednesday’s local rivals, Barnsley.
Before departing the Tykes for Wales, DKD scored 13 goals in 24 games. He was averaging a goal every 153 minutes, 2.4 shots per game, and 1.3 shots on target per game.
It was the 2024/25 League One season that likely made teams take a closer look at Keillor-Dunn. The forward received an average Sofascore rating of 7.15, the highest in the Barnsley squad.
He finished the campaign with 18 goals, three behind the league’s leading scorer, Charlie Kelman. Keillor-Dunn ended the season with 2.4 shots per game and one shot on target per game.
The forward also played his part creatively. He recorded seven assists, creating 11 big chances, and averaging 1.1 key passes per game.
His stats in League One campaigns are enough to get any fan of a League One club excited and show why the Owls should at least enquire about his availability going into next season.
Could Sheffield Wednesday Sign Keillor-Dunn?
With Wrexham just missing out on the play-offs, they will likely be keen to push on again. That will include bringing in more talent that could push Keillor-Dunn further down the pecking order.
If that’s the case, the Owls might be able to sign DKD on loan at the very least and make him one of the key players in their squad.
They likely won’t be one of the only teams looking at him if he becomes available. He has shown his quality in League One and could probably do a job in the Championship if he is given the chance.
Sheffield Wednesday signing Keillor-Dunn would be a real statement of intent from the new owners ahead of this season, and he could be a crucial part of their promotion chase.
