Doncaster Rovers are set to sign Jordan Thomas after allowing star winger Luke Molyneux to join Salford City.
The Ammies struck a deal with Grant McCann’s side after the former Hartlepool United man rejected the offer of a new contract in South Yorkshire, opting to cash in with just one-year left on the 28-year-old’s contract.
Oxford Woes Allow Doncaster Swoop
Now, according to Gloucestershire Live’s Jon Palmer, Thomas is now set to join Rovers after being left in limbo by Oxford United following their transfer embargo.
The former Cheltenham Town man was on the verge of striking a deal to play for the Yellows, but after restrictions were placed upon Aaron Ramsey and his side for the remainder of this window, it meant that the 25-year-old could not be registered at his hometown club.
Thomas opted to leave the Robins at the end of the season, having contributed eight goals and six assists as part of Steve Cotterill’s revitalisation of the Whaddon Road club in League Two.
He now heads to the Eco-Power as a free agent, joining a large contingent of former Cheltenham players including Hakeeb Adelakun, Alfie May and Isaac Hutchinson, who was the club’s most recent new recruit after striking a deal with Bristol Rovers.
Doncaster Secure Ideal Replacement
While the perfect scenario would have seen Luke Molyneux continue on at Doncaster Rovers, a move for Jordan Thomas should be an adequate alternative.
Securing an acceptable fee for the 28-year-old, combined with a free agent deal for Jordan Thomas, marks some great value for money for Grant McCann, and with him already having some rapport with the rest of the front line, it could be some very shrewd business indeed.
Having not really had a regular chance to prove himself in League One across his debut season at Cheltenham Town, the winger proved himself to be a more than capable player in the division below, and the experience he has picked up since then should aid him in this step up.
His versatility across either side of the pitch should complement Hakeeb Adelakun well, and having that pair rotate either side of Alfie May when necessary could make them a tricky trio to defend against.
For Oxford United, it marks another missed opportunity, with their transfer embargo once again costing them dearly, and leaving new boss Aaron Ramsey understocked in firepower for at least the first half of the season.
