Carlisle United have turned down a permanent bid for one of their ever-present figures from the EFL, as they continue their respective preparations for the 2026/27 campaign.
Rob Elliot’s side have been somewhat quiet in the transfer window thus far, though have brought in several fresh faces in order to tighten up their defensive options as well as providing a stronger midfield unit.
The club reached the play-off places in the National League last season under Mark Hughes, but crashed out on home soil against Boreham Wood in the semi-finals – suggesting a motivation for them to want to go even further next time around.
Carlisle reject EFL offer
In order for sides to gain promotion from the National League, they need to build strong squads that also ensures that they retain key players, rather than going through significant rebuilds.
However, sometimes there are occasions when it becomes acceptable for clubs to sell certain individuals, in order to reinvest in other areas – though whether Carlisle are doing that here remains to be seen.
According to a report from journalist Pete O’Rourke, Carlisle United have turned down a bid from League One side Cambridge United for goalkeeper Gabriel Breeze, though it is yet to be revealed as to whether a future offer will arrive.
Breeze was ever-present between the sticks for Carlisle last season, featuring in 41 of their 46 league matches – whilst keeping 16 clean sheets, more than double the total that he managed in the previous campaign.
The 22-year-old has spent his entire career with the club, rising through their youth system and into the first-team setup, almost thrown in at the deep end during their 2024/25 relegation campaign.
He is under contract at Brunton Park until June 2027, ensuring that should he depart the club this summer – it would likely be for an undisclosed fee rather than a free transfer or loan exit, given he is likely to be their first-choice goalkeeper next season.
Should Carlisle consider a sale?
Despite keeping 16 league clean sheets last season, Breeze was at fault for several errors which ultimately cost Carlisle valuable points in their pursuit of the title – which gives the club a decision to make this summer.s
The 22-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at Brunton Park, meaning this summer is likely to be their final opportunity to receive a significant fee for his services.
Similarly, there are still several goalkeepers such as Jack Sims and Harrison Male that remain without a club – with the latter winning the National League’s Golden Glove award in each of the last two seasons, winning the title last time out.
Selling Breeze and signing one of these free agents would allow the club to financially strengthen in other areas of the pitch. They have already signed Archie Mair on a permanent deal, providing further competition between the sticks.
If the club want to improve in other areas but are potentially reluctant to spend money, selling the 22-year-old could give them the freedom to do that without diving into their playing budget 0 but despite his errors, Breeze has also shown plenty of his ability.
It could also come down to whether the 22-year-old wants to test himself at a higher level, thus returning to League One for the first time since his debut campaign – though he would likely see reduced minutes as he competes for a spot at Cambridge next season.
