Bradford City are set to let Tommy Leigh leave on loan to join League Two’s Bristol Rovers.
The midfielder has struggled for game time for the Bantams, but has still made a big contribution to their promotion push with 16 appearances across the League One campaign.
Rovers Rejig Continues
According to Pete O’Rourke, Tommy Leigh is now set to leave Valley Parade and join Bristol Rovers in their push to avoid relegation in League Two.
Joining City 12 months ago, the former MK Dons man played a pivotal role in their promotion, playing the long ball forward, which Antoni Sarcevic capitalised upon to secure Bradford’s automatic promotion in the most dramatic of circumstances.
Graham Alexander’s side have recruited well in midfield this window, with two loan signings in the form of Oxford United‘s Louie Sibley and Newcastle United’s Joe White.
Steve Evans’ side have undergone an overhaul since the turn of the year, with multiple loan moves cancelled to allow a rebuild following a dire start to the season.
Midfield has been a particular priority, with their first deals in the window seeing Isaac Hutchinson return from Cheltenham Town and Ryan De Haviland sign permanently from Peterborough United.
No Place For Leigh At City
With Max Power and Jenson Metcalfe becoming a duo that Graham Alexander can rely on more and more, there seems to be limited opportunities for Tommy Leigh at Bradford City.
While the latter has been subject to Championship interest this deadline day, it is believed he will stay in West Yorkshire, and with a few other players in the squad capable of sitting in the middle of the pitch, allowing Leigh to leave is a good choice.
He heads to Bristol City as Steve Evans makes his mark at the Memorial Stadium, and Leigh could be a vital piece of his plans with his flexibility as a midfielder and forward crucial in their efforts to try and avoid relegation.
Where he fits into the squad remains to be seen, but if Rovers can capture the attacking prowess he showed during his time at Accrington Stanley, then the Pirates could have found a brilliant deal to help their ambitions.
More Players To Leave?
Bradford City may feel comfortable with the business they have done this January, but with a couple of players firmly out of the picture at Valley Parade, a few more exits could be the right course of action.
Both Neill Byrne and Calum Kavanagh have made exits in the past week, alongside earlier departures for Tom McIntyre, Alex Pattison and Andy Cook.
Nick Powell and George Lapslie have both struggled for game time, especially the former, who has not featured since the Bantams’ EFL Cup tie against Newcastle United.
Neither have been able to make the step up to League One convincingly, and as the Bantams look to establish themselves as League One regulars as a minimum, clearing out those fringe players will allow them to do so.
