Wycombe Wanderers are plotting an ambitious swoop for Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Conor Hazard.
The Pilgrims goalkeeper has had a tough season at Home Park, with injury issues and call-ups to the Northern Ireland squad limiting him to 29 appearances in League One this campaign.
Chairboys Plot Last-Minute Move
However, the former Celtic man could be on the move this summer, with Alan Nixon reporting that Wycombe Wanderers are staging a late bid to tempt the 28-year-old away from Devon.
Hazard is set to be out of contract at the end of this season, but was offered new terms by Argyle two weeks ago, with no decision yet to be announced.
Nixon states that Michael Duff’s side are optimistic that they can better the terms offered to the goalkeeper by Plymouth, with the former Huddersfield Town boss looking to bring the Chairboys back into promotion contention.
There has been a battle for the gloves at Adams Park this campaign, with Will Norris and 22-year-old Mikki van Sas both handed regular game time between the sticks, with the former being the preferred choice.
Norris has been offered new terms by the club upon the publication of their retained list earlier this month, but no update has come as to whether the former Portsmouth man will stick around.
Should Wycombe Sign Hazard?
With his Championship experience being exactly what Wycombe Wanderers are looking for as they plan to go all in to get back into the second tier, Conor Hazard is a sensible target.
The 26-year-old has been the more assured option in goal for Plymouth Argyle this season, and it is no wonder why the club have offered him new terms as part of their own ambitions to get back into the Championship.
Keeping continuity at Home Park following their stellar end to the season is the key to Tom Cleverley’s side if they are to gain promotion, and having Hazard rather than deputy Luca Ashby-Hammond will be a major confidence boost at the back.
Wycombe’s interest may also hint at a struggle to get Will Norris to agree to a new deal in Buckinghamshire, which could stem from whether he is considered the number one choice at the club.
Given Mikki van Sas has emerged as a potential option to rival the 32-year-old, having played 12 of the club’s League One games this season, Norris’ long-term future may be in doubt if he sticks around and the Dutchman is afforded more opportunities.
However, Hazard would be a step up on the current Chairboys pair, meaning they should try and strike a deal before it is too late and Plymouth secure their star for another few years.
