League One’s bottom side Wigan Athletic are looking to bring in a new striker to improve their squad for the rest of the season.
The Latics have had a terrible start to the season. They’ve lost all three of their games and were also defeated by Barnsley in the EFL Cup First Round.
While there is still plenty of time left in the season, those at the club will likely be keen to kick-start their season sooner rather than later.
To do that, they are turning to the transfer market and looking to make moves before the window closes at 11pm.
One area they appear to be keen to add more quality to is their attacking line, with the club now being linked with a late move for Stephen Humphrys.
Wigan Make Late Bid for Stephen Humphrys
Alan Nixon has shared on his Patreon that the Latics are making a late bid to sign Bradford City forward Humphrys.
The 28-year-old hasn’t featured for the Bantams this season and has played for Wigan before, suggesting the move makes sense for both.
The Goalscorer Wigan Needs?
He hasn’t had any competitive action this season, but last he scored seven League One goals in 38 appearances for Bradford. That return isn’t as bad when you consider he started 23 times and averaged 61 minutes per game.
In his best League One season, the forward scored 11 goals for Rochdale in the 2020/21 season. In that campaign he also recorded an impressive 3.3 shots per game and one shot on target per game.
A new striker is one thing Wigan do need before the end of the season. They’ve failed to replace the goals of Joe Taylor, who got 15 goals last season even though he only joined in January.
Humphrys is familiar with the club, and in his last campaign for Wigan he scored 11 goals in all competitions, including nine in the league. If he can hit the ground running, he could be the catalyst for Wigan’s much-needed early-season revival.
