Wigan Athletic could lose Ronan Darcy in the final week of the transfer window, with a League Two side eyeing a deal for the 25-year-old.
The former Swindon Town man is yet to make his way into Gary Caldwell’s plans so far this season, having spent the previous campaign on loan at both Chesterfield and later his former side in Crawley Town, where he featured 13 times.
Newcomers Eye Deal
The Latics have made several moves to strengthen their attacking midfield options this summer, recruiting both Chelsea’s Reggie Walsh and Fulham’s Luke Harris on loan, while Sonny Perkins was made a permanent recruit from Leyton Orient.
That has left Darcy deep down the pecking order in Lancashire, and that has potentially opened the door for a sale of the 25-year-old, with Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reporting that York City, among other sides, are keen on signing him.
Scott Lindsey’s side are scrambling to add final additions to their squad after a lukewarm start in the League, including a hotly contested race to sign AFC Fylde youngster Danny Ormerod, with bids as high as £500,000 rejected by the non-league club.
The Minstermen have relied on two of their key players who pushed them to the National League title in Joe Grey and Alex Newby, with the pair combining together to score their first goal in the opening-day win over Bristol Rovers.
Across his two spells in League Two last season, Darcy played in 37 matches, scoring three times and providing three assists.
Sale Key For Wigan’s Fortunes
Having poached him away from Wigan Athletic in January of 2025, Ronan Darcy was supposed to be a big fixture of the Latics’ team going forward, but ultimately, his time at the club has panned out poorly.
Making just 14 appearances for the senior side overall, the 25-year-old has struggled to make the step into League One on a regular basis in Lancashire, and ultimately, that saw Ryan Lowe bite the bullet and ship him back off to League Two with Chesterfield.
The summer signings of Walsh, Harris and Perkins have essentially knocked Darcy out of any future plans for Gary Caldwell, and letting him walk away is the best course of action, freeing up space for a new player to come in permanently in the future.
York City, of course, offers a very enticing prospect for Darcy to head to, and would reunite him with Scott Lindsey, who has a penchant for recruiting members of the Crawley team that won the League Two playoffs.
Whether he can establish himself as a regular at the LNER Community Stadium, however, is a different question, as with Joe Grey and Alex Newby, the Minstermen have two very dependable options that were pivotal to their promotion last season.
