Top Flight Side Eye Accrington Stanley Striker Amid Goalscoring Concerns

Aberdeen have reportedly sent scouts across the border to watch Accrington Stanley striker Josh Woods as Stephen Robinson looks to strengthen his attacking options, according to Alan Nixon.

The Scottish Premiership side have endured a difficult start to the season in front of goal, and Woods’ recent form has seemingly caught their attention. However, with Accrington hoping to mount a promotion challenge of their own, convincing the League Two outfit to part with one of their most influential players could prove difficult.

Woods Attracting Attention After Impressive Form

The forward has attracted interest over the past six months after showing signs of his potential at the Wham Stadium. The forward finished last season strongly, scoring four goals in April despite Accrington’s struggles, with Stanley winning just once in 13 matches.

It was rumoured that Chesterfield had offered a six-figure sum during the summer transfer window. Paul Cook was looking to add another attacking option to partner Lee Bonis, but the Spireites turned their attention to targets, Louis Marsh and Fraser Bryden.

Since then, Woods has continued to develop his reputation as a forward capable of making an impact at League Two level.

His recent performances have been particularly impressive, with four goals in his last three matches highlighting his growing influence in the final third. Strong displays against Gillingham and away at York have further underlined why clubs may be monitoring his progress.

Last season, Accrington struggled to find a consistent source of goals. Woods and Paddy Madden finished as the club’s joint-top scorers with seven goals apiece, while Tyler Walton led the way with ten in the previous campaign.

Woods has already reached seven goals this season, putting him on course to surpass those totals if his form continues.

For a club that has failed to finish in the top ten in each of their last eight seasons, finding a reliable goal scorer should be crucial to changing the narrative.

Aberdeen’s Goalscoring Concerns

Aberdeen’s interest comes amid their own difficulties in front of goal. Robinson’s side scored just seven goals in their opening eight league matches, with four coming against Motherwell. They have also failed to score in five of those fixtures.

Although recent performances have offered some encouragement, consistent goalscoring remains a concern. Woods could provide a much-needed boost, with his current confidence in front of goal.

However, Robinson’s managerial position may also attract scrutiny. During his time at St Mirren, the Paisley side scored just 30 league goals across the season, the lowest in the division.

That record does not mean Aberdeen will suffer the same problems, but it raises questions about whether signing another striker alone would solve their attacking issues.

For Accrington, the situation is straightforward. Woods is in form and has an important role to play in their season. Aberdeen may need to offer a substantial fee to tempt the Reds into selling.

Should Woods Make The Move?

Whilst a move to Scotland would represent a significant opportunity for the English striker, the timing could prove difficult.

Woods must be careful that he does not make the jump too quickly. At Accrington, he is scoring regularly and building confidence. Moving to a struggling side could disrupt his momentum, and if he fails to get going, he may be booted out fast.

This deal may prove too difficult to come off; if Accrington are serious about a promotion push, they need their key players. And that will only increase his price tag, which may be too much for the Scottish side to afford.
