Sheffield Wednesday have announced that they have sacked manager Henrik Pedersen in the wake of their 2-0 defeat away at Doncaster Rovers.
It was a result which dropped the Owls into eighth place in the League One table after 11 matches and saw a portion of the travelling fanbase call for the Dane’s removal from his post.
Wednesday Pull Trigger On Pedersen Era
In the wake of the defeat to their South Yorkshire rivals, the 48-year-old was confident that he could win back the trust of the fanbase in the coming weeks, starting at Hillsborough with a midweek fixture against surprise playoff contenders Cambridge United.
However, the decision to sack Pedersen with immediate effect was taken by the club and officially announced on social media in a statement from Sporting Director Simon Wilson.
“First and foremost, I want to thank Henrik for his professionalism, commitment and contribution during an exceptionally challenging period for Sheffield Wednesday.
“We knew the start of this season would be difficult due to the scale of change across the club, but our expectation was always that we would develop as the season progressed, establishing a recognisable style of play and greater consistency in our performances.
“Although we have accumulated points, we haven’t seen enough progress in those areas. We believe making a change now gives us the best opportunity to establish those foundations and build towards the second half of the season and beyond.

“We remain ambitious about what we can achieve this campaign, and our focus remains on building a Sheffield Wednesday team with a clear identity, capable of delivering sustained improvement and long-term success.”
Across 64 games for the club, Pedersen had a 19% win rate, largely damaged by the tight restrictions imposed on his side during the final months of the Chansiri ownership. His record in League One saw five wins, three draws and three losses.
It was further reported that former Rotherham United head Matt Hamshaw would be installed as the interim manager for the foreseeable future.
A Harsh Decision To Make?
While far from an exciting start to the season for Sheffield Wednesday, Henrik Pedersen was able to get his side competitive in many matches and kept well within the promotion chase in League One.
A man who certainly should be viewed with fondness when reflecting upon his tenure at Hillsborough, the choice to relieve him of his duties is seemingly down to the ambition of where this squad could finish under other management.

While perhaps harsh on the Dane given how much he has aided this club in their time of need, it is arguably the correct decision given the waning support of the fanbase in recent weeks after losses to Notts County and finally Doncaster Rovers.
Who Should Wednesday Approach?
With an exciting squad available to any potential managers, the Owls job could be a great bounty for those with ambitions of Championship management and perhaps more in the near future.
Dave Challinor is the most obvious name to tie to the role, given past rumours that he would only consider a return to the touchline if Wednesday were to come to the fore, and with his credentials from Stockport County, is an ideal frontrunner to have.

While they may face competition from the now-managerless Burnley, Rob Edwards could be a much more ambitious steal, and if he is willing to stick it out in League One and battle for promotion, then he could be the perfect man to spearhead a rise up the Championship table going forward.
Other names will be floated in the days and weeks to come, but for a side with a strong foundation, the Sheffield Wednesday job is sure to be highly coveted.
