Sheffield Wednesday are eyeing a move to sign Elliot Lee once the midfielder terminates his contract at Wrexham.
The 31-year-old has been stuck on the fringes of the Red Dragons squad since their promotion to the Championship, with last season seeing him head out on loan to Doncaster Rovers in League One.
Racecourse Exit Secured
However, Lee’s time in North Wales has come to an end, with Rich Fay of the RobRyanRed Podcast confirming that he has agreed to a mutual termination of his contract with Wrexham.
It brings to an end a four-year spell at the club, having recruited him from Luton Town on a free transfer in order to assist with their efforts to try and break their way into the EFL.
The midfielder was pivotal in their first two promotion-winning seasons, including a 16-goal, six-assist haul across all 46 League Two matches in the 2023/24 campaign, earning him a place in the Team of the Season.
Wednesday Face Battle For Deal
In the same report, Fay has also confirmed that Sheffield Wednesday are poised to hand Lee a contract offer upon his release from Wrexham, with the Owls looking to round out their squad.
However, the Hillsborough club are not the only side pursuing a deal for the midfielder, with several, as-yet unnamed sides also keen on offering him terms, with Phil Parkinson stating in the build-up to deadline day that there was interest away from the Racecourse Ground.
Henrik Pedersen’s side are bound to an EFL-agreed spending limit cap, meaning that the club are having to recruit free agents and loanees from now until the next transfer window.
Should Wednesday Make A Move?
In the wake of Tyler Onyango’s season-ending injury, Sheffield Wednesday have looked slightly weak in terms of their midfield options, which arguably led the club to make their move to re-sign Jaden Heskey on loan.
Now, a potential further addition has emerged in the form of Elliot Lee, who is leaving Wrexham to try and get back into the first-team fold on a regular basis.
Having put up a solid spell with Doncaster Rovers last season, it is clear the 31-year-old has a lot left to offer, but with Wednesday already making several key moves, it does feel a strange deal to make, even if it comes at no cost.
With plenty of coverage across all three midfield positions Henrik Pedersen deploys, Lee could run into the same issues he’s faced at Wrexham, albeit not to the same extent with some level of game time likely at Hillsborough.
But, with other offers on the table, it feels that Lee should instead pursue those avenues of interest rather than try and dislodge a player like Callum Slattery or Kieran Morrison in the Owls squad.
