Sheffield Wednesday’s Sporting Director Simon Wilson has admitted that if the chance to sign Jamie Vardy comes up, the club would be interested.

The Owls have signed 18 new players this summer as the club rebuilt after last season’s disastrous administration-hit campaign. Wednesday have done a mixture of free transfers and loans, as well as spending the little money the EFL allowed.

Their business has been heavily restricted by the EFL, with David Storch admitting in an interview recently that he misunderstood the EFL restrictions on the club. Despite that, they have done well in the window, and early in the season, their hard work appears to be paying off on the field.

Even with the transfer window closed, clubs can still sign free agents. That includes Sheffield Wednesday fan and former England striker, Jamie Vardy, who has been linked with a move to Hillsborough all summer.

Sheffield Wednesday Would Be Interested in Vardy Talks

Speaking to local media recently, including BBC Radio Sheffield and The Star, Wilson was asked about the possibility of the club signing Vardy. Wilson was open and honest with his answer, saying:

I think if Jamie Vardy wanted to come to the football club, if there was a way to do it, I think we’d be interested in having that conversation.

At this current moment in time, there’s not a conversation happening around that. It’s not to say there can’t be, it’s not to say there won’t be, but there isn’t one right now.

The Owls Face Competition Though

Even at the age of 39, Vardy is attracting a lot of interest from some serious teams. Various clubs have been linked with a move for the forward as clubs now start to assess the free agent market.

The most recent team linked with Vardy is Premier League side Everton. The Toffees missed out on a new striker in the window, and after Beto departed, they are left with just one senior forward. It’s been reported by The Sun that Vardy has been considered by the Everton hierarchy as a possible solution.

Sky Sports News reporter Rob Dorsett has also reported that West Ham have submitted an offer for the former Leicester City man. Teams in the MLS and Brazilian Sao Paulo are also interested. Dorsett also confirmed that Vardy will wait to make a decision about his future.

Can Sheffield Wednesday Pull Off Their Dream Signing?

As much as every Wednesday may want Vardy at the club, the harsh reality is they are under strict financial restrictions after entering administration last season. But the club appear keen to make it work.

Storch told talkSPORT that the club had submitted a proposal to the EFL that was quickly rejected. But if the player does want to join, surely there will be a way the club can put together a deal that appeases the EFL.

The revenue alone from the deal would likely pay for itself. Wednesday fans have really bought back in since Storch and co took over, and if Vardy did join, the shirt sales with his name and number on the back would likely break club records.

The longer he stays a free agent, the more hope Wednesday fans will likely get that a dream deal to sign Vardy is actually a reality.
