Sheffield United are seeing encouraging signs from one of their January loan decisions after another influential display in League One.

The Blades’ Ryan Oné continued his bright start away from Bramall Lane, delivering both a goal and a performance that underlined why the temporary move was sanctioned.

Oné has now scored twice in his opening three appearances for Lincoln City since making the short-term switch from Sheffield United during the winter window. His latest contribution came in a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Northampton Town, where he marked his first start with the opening goal.

Operating from the right flank, the 19-year-old latched onto a through ball before curling a first-time finish beyond Ross Fitzsimons and into the far corner inside the opening quarter of an hour. It set the tone for a dominant evening for Lincoln, but from a Sheffield United perspective, the focus is on development rather than scorelines.

Positive Signs For The Blades

Oné’s two previous outings for Lincoln had come from the bench, including a goal in a 4-1 win over Plymouth Argyle, yet this was his first opportunity to influence proceedings from the outset. That he took it confidently will be noted back in South Yorkshire.

Lincoln head coach Michael Skubala was quick to highlight both the forward’s finishing ability and his off-the-ball work after the match. The Lincoln boss pointed to his physicality and pace, while also suggesting the youngster has grown into the tactical demands placed upon him since arriving in January.

“Yes, he’s got that – we’ve seen it in training. He has got a great finish, he’s physical, he’s fast and we saw that tonight as well.

“I thought for a young man to come in in a game like that and put a performance in like he did [was good]. But what you also saw was hard work off the ball.

“It’s taken him a couple of weeks to get to what we want and what we expect off the ball, but you saw his quality on it as well.”

For Sheffield United, that is precisely the objective of a mid-season loan. Regular starts, exposure to promotion-chasing pressure and tangible end product all contribute to a broader assessment of whether a player is ready to compete for minutes at Championship or Premier League level in the near future.

The Blades have traditionally used League One as a proving ground for emerging talent, and Oné’s early return suggests this particular placement has been well judged. Lincoln are unbeaten in 15 league matches and pushing strongly in the automatic promotion race, meaning the winger is learning in a high-stakes environment rather than drifting through mid-table fixtures.

While it remains early days, Sheffield United’s recruitment and development staff will be encouraged by both the statistical output and the qualitative feedback emerging from Lincoln. If the upward trajectory continues over the coming weeks, the conversation around Oné’s role next season may shift significantly.

For now, the priority is consistency. But two goals in three appearances, including one on his first start, represent exactly the kind of impact Sheffield United will have hoped for when sanctioning the January move.
