New Peterborough United manager Robbie Savage has promised to deliver an exciting, attacking brand of football following his appointment earlier this afternoon.
It’s been somewhat of a rollercoaster few weeks for Posh fans. Previous boss Luke Williams was shown the exit door last month following a 2-0 defeat against Doncaster Rovers.
Sitting in the bottom four in League One, Ryan Harley and Connell Rawlinson oversaw matters during last weekend’s clash with Stockport County whilst the search for a successor was undertaken. Despite an improved showing, they suffered a 1-0 reverse.
Savage News Developed Quickly
The result was somewhat overshadowed by the earlier news that Forest Green Rovers manager Robbie Savage had emerged as a ‘serious contender’ for the position. There’s little doubt that this was a surprising development, especially because the former Birmingham City and Wales midfielder has no EFL experience at management level.
This evolved quickly when Rovers owner Dale Vince released a statement on Tuesday claiming Savage had been offered the position at the Weston Homes Stadium. Peterborough swiftly denied this, with ex-Salford City boss Karl Robinson seen leaving London Road earlier that day.

FGR Chairman Dale Vince said: “We have given Robbie Savage permission to speak to Peterborough.
He wanted to leave the club for personal reasons, reasons which we understand and respect.

It was then confirmed by various outlets yesterday that the 51-year-old had indeed been offered the role. That was then confirmed by Peterborough earlier today, with a ‘long-term contract’ announced.
Savage Promises Excitement
It’s fair to say that the news of Savage’s appointment has been met with a mixed reception from the supporters. However, the new gaffer is keen to showcase what he is all about and has promised to deliver an exciting brand of football. Speaking to official club media, he said:
“What attracted me to the club is the size of the club, the philosophy, working with young players and making them better, but the style of football was key.
“I based my football philosophy at previous clubs on the way that Peterborough play, I have studied the club for a number of years now. I love entertaining, attacking football, that is my belief. I would rather win games 5-4 than 1-0. It is the perfect fit and I am really excited about the opportunity.
“I am really looking forward to getting out their on the training ground, but I am a manager, I will be there for every session, but I believe in trusting the coaches in delivering the messages and the session.
“I am not a manager who is going to want my teams to pass the ball around the back and chalk up 600 passes every game, we are going to go for it and attack and if we are 1-1 at home with five minutes to go, I want my teams to go for the winner.
“I understand there will be people out there with reservations. We all know the modern world has changed with social media. I understand it. I have been around for a long time. I will stand on that touchline and protect my players, it is a brilliant squad, I can’t wait to get going, it is going to be fun.”
With tomorrow’s League One clash against Notts County postponed due to international call-ups, Savage’s first game in charge will be Tuesday night’s EFL Trophy fixture against Ipswich Town under-21s.
