Ex-West Ham Talent Finding His Feet at Luton Town

Former West Ham United striker Callum Marshall is showing signs of finding his feet at Luton Town after scoring in consecutive League One victories.

The Northern Ireland international’s recent goals have coincided with an improvement in results under Jack Wilshere, with the Hatters climbing to eighth in the table. Marshall scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Leicester City on Saturday before converting a penalty in Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers.

Those goals took his league tally to four this season, while Luton have now won three consecutive matches and four of their last five. For Marshall, it is an encouraging development after a promising youth career at West Ham failed to produce a regular first-team opportunity.

From West Ham Prospect to Luton Striker

Marshall joined West Ham from Linfield in January 2022 and quickly established himself as one of the club’s brightest academy prospects. He played an important role in the Hammers’ FA Youth Cup triumph in 2023, scoring in the quarter-final, semi-final and final.

Despite his success at youth level, Marshall made just three senior appearances for West Ham, including two in the Premier League, before leaving permanently in July. His development included loan spells at West Bromwich Albion, Huddersfield Town and German side Bochum.

He enjoyed his most productive spell at Huddersfield, scoring 10 goals in all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign and earning the club’s Player of the Year award.

Interestingly, Marshall already knew Wilshere from his academy days. The former Arsenal midfielder was coaching the Gunners’ Under-18s when West Ham beat them 5-1 in the 2023 FA Youth Cup final, with Marshall among the scorers.

Wilshere’s presence at Luton was subsequently one of the reasons Marshall chose to join the club. After several temporary moves, the striker was also keen to find somewhere he could settle.

Speaking to Luton Town’s official website following his arrival from West Ham, Marshall explained why finding a permanent home was important to him.

“Whenever you are a loan player, it’s difficult because you’re not their player,” he said.

“So coming here permanently, this is my home now and hopefully I can get settled off the pitch as well as on it.”

Marshall’s Goals Coincide With Luton’s Revival

Marshall’s recent contributions have come at an important time for Luton, who are beginning to find consistency under Wilshere. The striker had spent several matches among the substitutes before making a decisive impact against Leicester.

Wilshere was delighted with his contribution, telling Luton Today:

“I’m delighted for Marshy, that’s what we need from him.”

However, the Luton manager also emphasised the importance of competition for places.

“Marshy needs to fight his way into the team”

Marshall subsequently returned to the starting line-up against Doncaster, earning another opportunity to impress.

Luton’s improved results have moved them to within one point of the League One play-off positions, with an away trip to Peterborough United awaiting them on Saturday. Two goals in two matches do not guarantee Marshall a regular starting place, but they offer encouragement after a difficult route into senior football.

Having struggled to establish himself at West Ham and spent several seasons moving between clubs, the striker may finally be finding the stability needed to fulfil his early promise.
