Barnsley have an outside chance of finishing in the League One play-offs, despite at one point looking nervously over their shoulders.
The Tykes are currently 13th, eight points off the top six, with four games in hand over Huddersfield Town, who occupy the 6th spot.
They have at least two games in hand over most of their play-off rivals, but will need games to go in their favour as well as winning all of their game advantages.
With the play-offs still a possibility, Opta’s Supercomputer has predicted where they will finish this season.
Opta Gives Barnsley 8.52% Chance of via Play-Offs
Opta’s Supercomputer has predicted that Barnsley will finish the season on 63.47 points. Sadly, that will only be enough to finish 11th in the league, five points off Stevenage in 6th.
Despite the fact that they believe the Tykes will miss out, the website has still given them an 8.52% probability of getting promoted via the play-offs this season.
How Does This Compare to the Pre-Season Prediction?
Before the season, the Opta Supercomputer predicted Conor Hourihane’s side would finish 12th in League One.
They were given just a 4.5% chance of finishing 6th, and a 3.4% probability of finishing in the top two.
With the South Yorkshire side expected to finish just one place above their predicted spot, the supercomputer will likely see that as a win.
What About Relegation to League Two?
Barnsley are just seven points above the drop zone, but with games in hand, it’s unlikely they will get dragged into the relegation battle.
That is backed up by Opta as well. They have given the Tykes a 0.88% chance of being relegated at the end of the season.
Before the season, Opta gave Barnsley a 3.9% chance of finishing 21st come the end of the season.
It looks likely that they will be looking up the league, instead of down it, for the rest of the season.
