Last week, the Ballon d’Or nominations list was revealed, detailing 30 players from the women’s game who are in the running to win the award this year. Of that number, one third are players in the WSL.
This list will focus on four of those ten nominees based in the league who could be in the best chance of winning this year, bringing home a huge triumph for English football and crowning the first-ever WSL winner of the prestigious award.
Alex Greenwood
Lioness and Manchester City defender Alex Greenwood is one of many nominees from the Cityzens, earning her a well-deserved place on the shortlist.
The international star captained City to win the WSL title last season, where she provided five assists, proving her talent not only in defence, but in all areas of the pitch.
She also supported England in a total of 111 caps during last season, making her a key member of the squad and a clear choice in defence.
The 33-year-old has proven herself worthy of taking home a Ballon d’Or this year through her clear leadership skills and reliability throughout last season.
Alessia Russo
Arsenal Striker Alessia Russo is another Lioness to be nominated for a Ballon d’Or this season, making her another potential winner at this year’s awards ceremony.
Internationally, she became one of England’s top ten goal scorers last season, making her a vital player in the strong national squad.
Her winner in the Lionesses’ 1-0 victory against Iceland marked her 30th senior international goal, proving her consistency and importance in the squad.
For Arsenal, the forward achieved 22 goals and eight assists across the WSL and Champions League combined, making her a worthy nomination at this year’s Ballon d’Or awards.
Alexia Putellas
Despite her nomination coming from a successful year at Barcelona, the new London City Lionesses signing would certainly bring home a win for English football if the Ballon d’Or went to her this year.
The two-time consecutive winner could take home another victory after being shortlisted for an excellent season at Barcelona, achieving 26 goals and 15 assists throughout the year.
She helped guide her squad to a Liga F victory last season, proving to be a pivotal member of the squad. Her statement move to the WSL this summer only highlights how sought-after her skills are.
The midfielder is well in the running to take home her third win at the awards this year, due to her dedication and successes.
Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw
Increasing Manchester City’s nominations further is Khadija Shaw, who has also just won the Golden Boot for her phenomenal season with the Blues.
The Jamaican has had a record-breaking season, reaching over 100 goals for City, and achieving the fastest hat-trick in WSL history during their 5-2 victory against Tottenham, taking only twelve minutes and 37 seconds.
Her dominant performances helped guide her side to a double win comprising of the Women’s Super League and Women’s FA Cup.
Overall, her fantastic season makes Bunny, in my opinion, the most deserving WSL star of a Ballon d’Or win this year.
Possibility Of A WSL Star Winning The Ballon d’Or
Overall, the nominations from the WSL this year have had dominant seasons, giving many the strong opportunity to win a Ballon d’Or this year.
However, there are also strong contenders from other leagues. Spain are searching for their sixth consecutive Women’s Ballon d’Or win, with players like Coll and Guijarro.
A strong chance for the WSL lies with Shaw, who has had a season for the history books, breaking records and achieving milestones for Manchester City as they finally reclaimed the top honour in English football.
