Oldham Athletic Duo to Miss Sheffield Wednesday Clash

Oldham Athletic will be without two of their players for the Sheffield Wednesday game after their red card appeals were unsuccessful.

The Latics were reduced to nine men in the first half against Crawley Town on Saturday, a game they went on to lose 1-0. Kai Payne was sent off in the 14th minute, and he was followed just over 15 minutes later by Kane Drummond. Oldham managed to keep the game level until the 52nd minute, but bottom of the league Crawley took the lead through Danilo Orsi.

The result keeps them very much in a battle for their EFL safety. They are level on points with Colchester United in 23rd and now just three points above the side that beat them on Saturday, with Crawley having a game in hand still to play.

The sending-offs both appeared to be soft, with manager Micky Mellon confirming to the Oldham Times they would probably appeal them. However, that appeal has been unsuccessful.

Oldham Athletic’s Red Card Appeal Unsuccessful

In a brief and to-the-point statement released on the club’s website. The Latics confirmed their appeal against both red cards has been unsuccessful. The club said:

“The appeals against the red cards issued to Kai Payne and Kane Drummond in the home fixture against Crawley have been unsuccessful.

“Both players will now be suspended for the matches against Northampton, Sheffield Wednesday and Shrewsbury.”

Voids to Fill

Both will be missed by Oldham, with Drummond’s absence likely to be felt slightly more so. The midfielder has featured 13 times in League Two this season, starting 10 times. The 25-year-old has an average Sofascore rating of 6.62, scoring one goal, creating five big chances, and averaging 1.1 key passes per game.

Payne, who is in his second loan spell in a row at the club from Wigan Athletic, has played five times this season, starting just three times. He’s created two big chances from midfield and is averaging 0.6 key passes per game.

Pair Will Miss Sheffield Wednesday Clash

As well as missing two league games, the pair will miss Oldham’s FA Cup clash on Sunday against Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls travel to Boundary Park for what will be new manager Dave Challinor’s first game in charge.

With the game live on TNT Sports, it’s a chance for players to display their abilities to a national audience. But with their appeal unsuccessful, Payne and Drummond will be forced to watch from the sideline against the Owls.
