Newcastle United are set to battle multiple Premier League rivals for striker Promise David as questions around Nick Woltemade’s future continue to circle.

The German forward, who arrived at St. James’ Park in the summer as one of two replacements for the outgoing Alexander Isak, has been reported to be unhappy about his situation on Tyneside by BILD, and has been linked with a move back to former club Stuttgart or previous admirers Bayern Munich.

However, there have been contrasting reports surrounding United’s number 27, with The Athletic’s Seb Stafford-Bloor refuting BILD’s claims that Woltemade would seek a return to Germany.

Magpies Face Battle For David

According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Newcastle United have held a long-standing interest in Union Saint-Gilloise striker Promise David after being impressed by his physical attributes.

The Canadian forward is the leading scorer for USG this season with 15 goals across all competitions, and is firmly in the race for the golden boot in the Belgian Pro League with his side leading the division from St.Truiden by two points.

David is in his second season at the Brussels-based club, having helped them to their first league title in 90 years in his debut campaign with 19 goals in 34 appearances.

Newcastle will face tough competition to sign the 24-year-old, with West Ham United believed to be leading the race to secure the forward, having already held initial talks to bring him to the London Stadium.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have already invested heavily in their forward options in the past few months, signing both Taty Castellanos and Pablo in their quest to escape relegation into the Championship.

Leeds United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle’s arch rivals Sunderland are also believed to be in the race, meaning there will be plenty of competition to sign David from England in the summer.

Will Eddie Howe Make A Move?

With Newcastle United having plenty of interest in Promise David over the past few months, it would seem like they are prime candidates to sign the forward when the window opens at the end of the season.

However, that does come with the massive caveat of the Magpies having two very strong striking options in Nick Woltemade and Yoanne Wissa, with neither likely to leave so soon after the club invested heavily to recruit the pair.

While Will Osula is likely to leave after this season runs its course, it feels unlikely that David would accept a similar role to the one the Dane holds at St. James’ Park, meaning this move may be dead in the water before it can develop.

Out of the named clubs, Brighton and Sunderland may be the best destinations for the 24-year-old to head to, with the Seagulls needing to find a consistent striking option to replace the ageing Danny Welbeck, while Regis Le Bris will want a surefire backup to Brian Brobbey going forward.
