Luton Town winger Izzy Jones has admitted he was left frustrated by his side’s body language during Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Cardiff City, suggesting at times it looked like the Hatters “gave up” against the League One leaders.

Cardiff City moved further clear at the summit with a commanding display, while Luton Town were left to reflect on another disappointing afternoon on their travels.

Having arrived in Wales off the back of a morale-boosting 2-1 home victory over Bradford City, Jack Wilshere’s side were unable to replicate the battling qualities shown at Kenilworth Road. The Hatters had been unbeaten in ten home matches, but their away form has continued to undermine their campaign.

Cardiff struck early when Joel Colwill shrugged off three Luton players before teeing up David Turnbull to convert from close range. Town did respond, with Jones winning a penalty that Jordan Clark calmly dispatched in the 20th minute to level the scores.

However, the contest swung decisively in the closing stages of the first half. Ollie Tanner capitalised on a slip from Kasey Palmer to set up Colwill for Cardiff’s second, before Perry Ng was afforded space to fire home from distance. Luton improved after the break, but the damage had already been done.

Cardiff superiority

Speaking after the game, Jones acknowledged Cardiff’s superiority while expressing concern at his own side’s application during key moments.

“I want to say congratulations to Cardiff, the better team on the day. We got back into the game after being under the cosh a bit, got the penalty, scored it and I felt like we were okay at times, but then the last 10 minutes of the first half, we didn’t win our individual battles.

“We gifted them a goal and from there, not panic stations, but we lost control, lost momentum and then he scored a worldie. I just felt our body language, we gave up at times.

“Second half was better, it was like cat and mouse, we gave a better account of ourselves, never gave up, but at this level if you don’t win your one v one battles, your duels, you’re never going to come our on top and that’s what happened.”

The winger also addressed concerns over Luton’s recurring struggles away from home, suggesting that accountability within the squad must improve if they are to force their way into the play-off places.

“It’s stuff that we’ve just got to talk about. We’ve had many honest conversations this season, even when I was injured we had many under (Matt) Bloomfield at the time, and I just feel like it’s only us that can deal with that and sort it out.

“The gaffer can gives us the tactics, but it’s us on the pitch that has to take responsibility and this season we haven’t taken a lot of responsibility, hence why where we are where we are right now. I think we’ve got the quality and the players in the changing room to change it.

“We’ve got the last 15 games of the season, and we need to change it to get into the play-off positions.”

Luton in the play-offs

With 15 matches remaining, Luton’s play-off ambitions remain alive, but their form on the road will need to improve significantly if they are to close the gap on the top six.

Kuton are sixth in the home form table, the tight atmosphere at the Kenny proving a lot for some teams to handle. On the road, they’ve suffered massively, and now they sit 14th.

Overall, they’re five points adrift of the top six, a position few expected them to be in when the season kicked off. With a gap of 17 points between them and the top two, automatic promotion is out of the question, but if they’re going to avoid a season of stagnation with their £20 million budget, they need to act fast.

The coming weeks may prove decisive in determining whether their home resilience can be matched by greater consistency away from Bedfordshire.
