MK Dons are reportedly close to securing the signing of centre-back Charlie Goode on a free transfer from Stevenage this summer.
The 30-year-old, whose contract at Stevenage expires at the end of June, has been a key figure in League One over the past two seasons. Last year, Goode made 45 league appearances and was recognised for his performances by being named in the League One Team of the Season. Despite some injury setbacks during his time at Stevenage, his leadership and consistency at the back have made him one of the division’s standout defenders.
Before joining Stevenage in 2024, Goode built up valuable experience across several clubs. His career began in non-League football, featuring for sides such as Hadley and Hendon. He later stepped up to League One with Scunthorpe United in 2015, where he spent four seasons and made over 80 league appearances.
Goode then moved to Northampton Town, where his influence grew significantly. He captained the team during the 2019-20 season, leading them to success in the League Two play-off final. The performances that campaign earned him several individual accolades, including Supporters’ Player of the Year and a spot in the PFA Team of the Year for League Two.
This form drew the attention of Brentford, and in 2020, Goode made the jump to the Championship with the club. He was part of the squad that secured promotion to the Premier League in 2021, although injuries limited his appearances. Loan spells at Sheffield United, Blackpool, and Wigan Athletic followed as he sought regular game time.
Sensible move for MK Dons
MK Dons, who secured promotion from League Two last season, are aiming to strengthen their squad as they prepare for life back in League One. The club’s ownership has shown a clear willingness to back manager Paul Warne in the transfer market, demonstrated by the signing of experienced centre-back Curtis Nelson earlier in the year. Adding Goode would continue that trend, providing the team with a reliable and proven defender.
With both defensive solidity and leadership qualities, Goode offers the attributes MK Dons need to compete at this level. His experience of promotion battles and playing in different tiers of English football will be invaluable for a club aiming to establish itself in League One.
This deal would likely be MK Dons’ first signing of the summer, signalling the start of an active transfer window for the club. All eyes will be on Warne as he looks to build a squad capable of not just surviving but making a strong impression in the league.
